The yacht Teredo sat at anchor, floating peacefully in Macaw Cove. A guard on the swim platform flicked a butt into the cove before pulling out another cigarette, lighting it. He turned, looking up towards the balcony. Voices could be heard getting louder as they walked aft. So intent he was, he never felt the hands grab on to his boots, pulling his feet out from under him. Going down with a thud, he scrambled to grab the smooth teak of the platform, before entering the water with a splash.
The hands that dragged him under wrapped around his body, holding him down. A double-edged dagger slid between his fourth and fifth intercostal muscles and straight into his heart. His struggles ceased, and the hands that dragged him under pushed him towards the sandy bottom.
“This is Viking. I’m aboard and moving into position.” Viking, known as Falenas Urigeiros outside the Londthyrian Confederacy Internal Security Bureau*, radioed back to her control. Three figures could be seen moving into her field of view, as she carefully unslung her M&P10. One figure in white was observed struggling, her hands behind her back; Viking wasn’t certain from her angle. She was forced into a chair on the balcony.
“New moon tomorrow night, Matron Daer. The altar on the island has been prepared for the sacrifice.”
The dark elf, Matron Daer Viking assumed, looked over at the seat. “Do you hear that, my lovely Iseret? Enjoy this last night, for tomorrow night you’re to be the main event celebrating Qrione.”
Viking sighed quietly. This was why she had been sent here in the first place. Iseret was the daughter of the Viscount of Alhdell Khema**. “Are you getting this,” she asked quietly into her earpiece.
“Daer, a human male that I assume is her head of security. How can I make that assumption? He’s wearing a black tactical uniform; make the logical conclusion.” Viking raised her head slightly. “Lady Iseret is also present, but not with them. No, I don’t believe her presence aboard Teredo is voluntary. Her arms were bound behind her back. Do I have the shot or not?”

* The Internal Security Bureau is the Confederacy’s domestic security service, comparable to the FBI, MI5, FSB, etc. Counterterrorism and counterintelligence also fall under the remit of the ISB; there are rumors that they have also been conducting domestic signals intelligence and acquisition, beginning in the mid-1980s. ISB public information officers, when asked, can neither confirm nor deny such allegations.
The ISB maintains field offices in all Confederacy member states, and is the lead law enforcement agency in interstate crime. The ISB also maintains field offices internationally in Confederacy consulates and embassies and actively coordinates international law enforcement with host nation law enforcement.
Due to the polytheistic nature of the Confederacy, religious toleration is a must, however the ISB also investigates reports of religious extremism and cult activity, and considers those activities falling under its remit on interstate crime.
There are unsubstantiated rumors of a “code name” section, with British SIS “License to Kill” authority. ISB PIO has emphatically stated “No Comment” when asked.

** Aldhell Khema is located in the dry interior of the main island, and was established with the first elven refugees from First Persian Satrapy/27th Dynasty of Egypt, in the mid-Fourth Century BCE. With the various conquests of Egypt over the next 1300 years, a trickle of refugees would arrive until the conquest of Egypt by the Rasidun Caliphate. This trickle became a flood as the elven population of Egypt fled during the Caliphate of Sulayman ibn Abd al-Malik, the seventh Caliph of the Umayyad Caliphate. In the 20th Century CE, the recorded accounts of their treatment by the Sulayman and his Egyptian officials were published, corroborating the history of Severus of Al’Ashmunein.
The region settled by these survivors is similar in climate to the Nile region of their home country, and is a fertile breadbasket along the river. These elves continue their veneration of the ancient Egyptian deities and traditions, including mummification.
While the government of Confederacy calls the head of state a “Count”, regionally the head of state is referred to as “Pharaoh”, and remains the head of both the Egyptian religion and state.
