"Jesus H. Christ Eli, just what did your goons do to her?"
Eli shifted the Garand slungover his shoulder. "You know the rules Alystra. Anyone, regardless of status or role, caught thieving gets thrown into the cell. She got caught stealing."
"And your fucking goons worked her over. Was that before or after they threw her in shackles and hung her in here. For fuck's sake, Eli, she's a joygirl, one of Lucy Fur's. Now she can't even do that.
"And just what the fuck did she steal to deserve a beating and confinement? A fucking gold watch? Narcotics from the med staff?"
"Three loaves of bread. And a couple of gallons of water."
Alystra bit down on her cigar as she rubbed the bridge of her nose. "Release her. Into my care and custody."
"Why should you fucking care about this joygirl?"
"Because my religion believes in meting out punishment proportionally: this punishment certainly doesn't fit the crimes. And her madame and I have an…understanding. And, I think, I'll be having a chat with her after you release her to me. This place is suddenly not such a good sanctuary."
"Fine, she's yours. You go out that gate, you're banished. The guards will have orders to shoot to kill if you come back.
"Ever since that goddamned portal opened, the world's gone straight down the crapper."
Alystra rolled her eyes. "Eli, I was born here, not off in the feywilds, and definitely not part of an invading army."
"Fine, whatever." Eli opened the cage and unshackled the poor girl. "Take her, she's your responsibility."
