Lol my issue when I started a bunch of years ago was that I thought being original meant not even using reference material. I saw improvement later on when I based my things on other stuff.

stage three is my cartoon style basically.
I use reference for anatomy but I use shapes for my sketch, very smooth linework. Not very realistic but it's accurate enough.
