Description This is an in-progress rendering of a 3D CAD model of the spacecraft "Messiah" from the movie "Deep Impact." This model is being made for Fantastic Plastic, and will serve as the basis of a 1/200 scale kit.

I've followed your work on this, and one point I've pondered is the cut-outs in the pusher plate for ventral and dorsal rockets (I know this is what is shown in the movie) but is this workable for a real-world nuclear pulse propulsion system?

No. Not even close. The propulsion system design is pretty much entirely fanciful, with "that looks cool" far outweighing any practical concerns. Heck, the "off the shelf components? The RSRMs and Energia boosters? Scaled very differently from the real ones. I wasted some time early on trying to shoehorn the real components into the model, and they didn't even come close to fitting.

Oh, well, it's still an interesting looking vehicle.

That was my thought (about the cut outs) also the plasma jet generated by the nuclear shaped charge is going to naturally pancake into a circular footprint on the pusher, so I was dubious of the overall shape of the pusher plate. Still, a visually interesting design.
