📖 History:
Valentine is a woman that lives in Noire City, commonly in association with the characters Chekhov and Detective Chadwick. Although she made small appearances before, her first real debut wasn't until a few months later, when Chekhov and Chadwick both noticed her as a threat to Noire City. Ever since then, Valentine has established herself as one of the city's most ambiguous enemies and even managed to make it into the rogues' gallery. She was originally characterized as supervillain, but is also depicted as an antiheroine, often doing the wrong things for the right reasons.
Valentine's real name is Lauren Hartstring, who started out as a military brat, often moving from place to place with her father, Jason. Even as a child, Lauren was self-conscious of her lack of beauty, evident in the way that people usually avoided socially interacting with her. Despite this, she made it her goal to become a cosmetic surgeon, originally intending to help others from enduring the same feeling of loneliness.
However, while attending Sammy Baldwin University, Lauren began having a secret relationship with her Professor, Alec Dawson. Because she never knew love from anyone other than her father, Lauren easily fell into Dawson's courting. About two years later he proposed to Lauren, but said that the wedding won't happen until he makes "the perfect woman", implying that he was going to perform cosmetic surgery on her.
During the procedure, Dawson used a new chemical called "Aphrodite" to help enhance Lauren's beauty. Unfortunately, she had an allergic reaction once it was injected, causing her to look even worse than before. When she tried to sue Dawson, he escaped the lawsuit by claiming "bankruptcy while also denying negligence." He also disappeared shortly after the incident, with Lauren never hearing from him again. Going through the first heartbreak in her life, Lauren then understood the impact of love and how blind it can make someone follow others.
Embarrased at how hideous she now looked, Lauren ended up dropping out of school and chose to move to an entirely different city. However, before she could act on her plan, Lauren got a second, more severe reaction to the Aphrodite chemical, putting her into an unconscious state. But in actuality, the allergic reactions were caused from her body slowly adjusting to the transformation of her new appearance. Lauren was in a slumber for about 51 hours until she woke up, immediately knowing that something was different about her. After looking into a mirror, she noticed a gorgeous woman staring back at her, and realized that she became what Dawson imagined, "the perfect woman".
Initially taken back at her beautiful appearance, Lauren decided to accept this moment as a "born-again" phase. From then onwards, Lauren also chose to go by the name Valentine, inspired by the same day she discovered her new look.
It didn't take long for Valentine to build a reputation in Noire City. In the weeks that followed, she already had numerous people vying for her attention, heavily obsessed with trying to please her. This sudden change in popularity slowly transformed Valentine's personality, making her more confident and egotistical as more people approached her. Plus, even after becoming beautiful, Valentine noticed that her body was still reacting to the chemicals, which eventually developed into her having superpowers.
Perhaps the only person that didn't welcome this change is Valentine's father, Jason. Thinking he would be happy with her and her newfound beauty, Valentine visited him and instead got the opposite results. Since the transformation, he became disgusted with how she carried herself, stating that being Valentine caused her to lose touch with her true self in the process. Valentine admitted that she misses being Lauren, but quickly said afterwards that nobody missed the old version of her, hence why she enjoys being beautiful so much. When Jason asked if there was a way he could see his "real" daughter again, Valentine coldly replied "no", believing that the effects of the chemicals are irreversible at this point. With the two of them disappointed in each other, Valentine set out on leaving, but not before Jason gave her his number and address, in hopes of seeing Lauren again when she eventually returns.
After she got back to Noire City, Valentine gave a brief look at the folded note before stuffing it back in her chest plate, and began to reflect on what Jason said. While she did feel nostalgic about being Lauren again, a bigger part of her also realized that Lauren was too emotionally fragile of a woman to be able to stand on her own. She experienced firsthand how powerful love could influence people to do things out of blind loyalty, and Valentine exploited this to her advantage. The only question that remained, was exactly HOW powerful could she become? Valentine looked all around at the endless buildings in Noire City, with the crazy feeling that she has the potential to bring an entire metropolis under her control. After this thought, a small smile went across her face as she grew more and more curious. As the way Valentine saw it, there was nothing wrong with being affectionate. Not yet, at least...
😘 Personality: On the surface, Valentine appears to be a self-centered woman who's only interested in her own needs, flirting and luring weak-minded people just to take what she wants and leave. She can also be a bit prideful at times, frequently commenting on her looks to gain attention.
▪Even though she dresses and acts in an erotic fashion, it's actually a facade to hide her deep thinking and high intellect. Within a few sentences of conversation, Valentine can pick up signals and intentions from people that they themselves won't even notice. However, despite what many consider her to represent love, beauty and affection, she lacks empathy deep down when interacting with other characters. Displays of intense emotion from people can also make her uncomfortable, and Valentine will often take that vulnerability as a sign of weakness. As a matter of fact, Valentine herself makes sure to always keep her true emotions hidden, making it seem as if there's an invisible barrier preventing her from expressing them. She could even talk to someone for a solid hour and still be a mysterious person to figure out...
▪ However, just because Valentine hardly opens up her real feelings doesn't mean it's impossible. On the contrary, Valentine is more interested in people that DON'T go out of their way to get her attention. She also becomes more attracted to others when they're shown to match or surpass her intelligence and wit. Although she doesn't mind company, Valentine usually prefers keeping to herself more than being around others, and would prefer to spend time with people that earned it. When Valentine finally does accept and trust someone, she'll put 100 percent into the relationship, and won't even expect them to put the same investment in her. However... once someone betrays Valentine, she'll turn cold very quickly, and (depending on the severity of the issue), may even seek revenge.
♠️ Hobbies & Habits: Valentine's favorite thing to do is karaoke of classic jazz, most notably of musician Frank Sinatra. As far as habits go, she has a tendency to get very sarcastic when people try to romance her with small talk and pickup lines.
🏠 Residing Area: Valentine lives in Noire City, a fictional area based on real life New York, USA. She took shelter in an abandoned church on Campbell Street, where she renovated the interior of the building and made it her home. Because the church appears to be demolished when looking at it from the outside, many people tend to ignore the place entirely, making it an ideal hiding area. To keep a low profile, Valentine enters and exits the church through a basement, that connects to the back of the building in an alleyway.
⚠️ Greatest Fear/Phobia: Valentine has a case of Astraphobia, a fear of thunder and lightning. During a storm, she becomes increasingly more anxious, even if the threat is minimal to her. As a countermeasure, she'll usually seek extra shelter from a storm, like sitting in a basement or lying in bed, with the covers almost pulled entirely over her. Because of this fear, Valentine frequently checks weather forecasts, always staying alert of incoming storms from the news.
▪ The origins of the fear date back to when Lauren was a small child, on an eventful night when there was a terrible thunderstorm. When she peered through the window to see how bad it looked outside, lightning struck a tree right in front of Lauren's home, greatly startling her with its blinding flash and brutal roar of thunder. As a result, Valentine was left shaken up from the experience, with the image replaying in her head whenever a storm occurs near her.
Powers/Abilities:
🔷️ Everlasting Beauty - Because of the Aphrodite chemical, Valentine's body will always stay in perfect condition, no matter what happens to her. For example...
🔸️ She'll always maintain her figure, regardless of how often or little she eats and exercises.
🔸️ Although she can still feel pain, external injuries like cuts, bruises and scars won't appear on her body.
🔸️ The chemical also enhanced Valentine's immune system, making her unable to catch diseases.
🔸️ Aging doesn't even have an effect on her. Althouh she can die of old age, Valentine will still look exactly the same 40 years from now.
🔷️ Enticing Aroma - Valentine wears a perfume that is a delightful scent, gently reaching any nose it passes through. Once the fragrance is inhaled, it begins to relax the muscles and nervous system of the target, calming them and putting them at ease. While this may sound harmless, the perfume also dulls the dexterity, reflexes and alertness of the character, and even making them less aggressive towards her. The aroma can be smelled up to 20 feet away, and has a stronger effect the closer someone is to her. It will also linger for several minutes after Valentine leaves an area.
▪ In addition, prolonged exposure to the aroma can cause targets to become docile, to the point where they'll be too passive to defend themselves against an attack, especially if Valentine is involved.
🔷️ Passion Mark - Valentine's signature power. With a simple display of love, the target receives a lipstick brand, and can gain a number of uses that follow in three stages of escalating efficiency. While a character is under the effects of a Passion Mark, they're briefly under Valentine's control, with the spell getting increasingly harder to break free in higher levels. However, regardless of what level a Passion Mark is, all three variations grant the victim an ability to sense Valentine's presence nearby.
🔸️ Fling (Level 1): Valentine blows a kiss at the target that invokes a sense of infatuation towards her. While under the effects, the target gets a short burst of speed and increased focusing that lasts for a while. Because Flings are the weakest form of control that Valentine can impose on them, the affected character will still remain fully aware and self-conscious of their own choices.
🔸️ Lover (Level 2): Valentine hugs the target from behind and whispers seductively in their ear, channelling strength into them. While empowered, the character becomes notably more powerful and durable, especially when standing close to Valentine. The Passion Mark appears on the neck and also lasts considerably longer than its Level 1 version. Affected victims of this mark may still retain some self-consciousness of the things they do, but will now have the urge to look after Valentine's safety, and carry out whatever tasks she may have.
🔸️ Soul Mate (Level 3): Valentine kisses the target on the lips for a minimum of three seconds, putting them under her complete control and also freeing them from all emotional pain. In contrast to the first two versions, Soul Mates only become stronger when they're pitted against characters they formed a bond with, but will also get highly aggressive towards them. Regardless if they're family or friends, Soul Mates will relentlessly hunt down their loved ones to ensure Valentine is the only person they care about. However, because of the fact that Soul Mates are so powerful, Valentine can only invest her energy into two of them at once.
Weaknesses:
❌ Strong-Minded Characters - Valentine will have a tougher time with people who have a high level of discipline. Characters that can stay focused will be able to resist the power of her Passion Marks (except for Level 3). The same thing even applies with her Enticing Aroma, if the person can remain diligent and also manage keep their distance from her. Although strict-minded characters tend to benefit more from her abilities, Valentine will have to strive much harder if she wishes to bring them under her control.
❌ Wiped Out - The Passion Mark is indeed Valentine's best skill, but it also comes with one of the worst drawbacks. Because it's lipstick, something as simple as water is enough to get rid of the spot, regardless of how potent the Mark was. Even if the Mark gets smeared in any way, it loses its value. Although Level 2 & 3 Passion Marks are more difficult to get rid of, it can still be a huge inconvenience and time-waster for Valentine.
▪ As a matter of fact, Level 1 Passion Marks can be avoided entirely. When Valentine blows a kiss it resembles a pink firefly, glowing as it travels through the air. If the character sees it coming, they can react accordingly and stay unaffected.
▪ On a similar note, it's also possible to tell when another person is affected by a Passion Mark. Their eye color changes to a tint of pink, and gets more distinguishable as the strength of the Mark increases.
❌ Physically Weak - Without the Passion Mark and Enticing Aroma, Valentine is just a regular human being. She holds no extra strength or durability behind her, instead relying solely on her beauty and charm to carry her forward. If Valentine faces an enemy that's clearly stronger than her AND isn't influenced by her gestures, then she'll be in serious trouble, having literally nothing else to fall back on.
❌ Married Couples - Characters who have already tied the knot are automatically immune to all effects of Valentine's abilities. Granted, they can still be attracted to her, but Valentine won't be able to turn them over to her side. Because their souls are technically binded together, Valentine cannot affect them with ANY of her powers until they divorce, or by forcefully breaking the bond (in other words, cheating on their significant other).
Cleverness:
⚖ If Valentine has a character nearby affected by a Passion Mark, then she can purposely put herself in danger, knowing that they'll come to her aid.
⚖ Valentine's Enticing Aroma can cover a really far distance when blown by the wind. If paired with a character that can use the air to their advantage, then Valentine will benefit immensely from it.
⚖ Everlasting Beauty may seem like a useless power to have, but the chemicals are also strong enough to prevent Valentine from also getting poisoned to a certain extent.
⚖ Valentine can stack multiple Passion Marks on a single person. So if planned carefully, she can have all three variations on one target, which in turn will make them EXTREMELY difficult to deal with for the enemy.
Trivia:
✴ Unlike most characters, Valentine's powers are always active. Even when she's sleeping, other characters can still be affected by her abilities.
✴ Valentine is the first female from Noire City to reach the two-star infamy level.
✴ When she was still in college, Lauren also took human psychology classes, which plays a huge part in her social interactions.
✴ Valentine is bisexual, hence the reason why her powers can work on both males and females.
