I immediately envisioned an association between these scientist monks and historical figures such as Sir Edmund Hillary and Jacques Cousteau. Dashing adventurers, questing knights, idealists, romantics, survivors, true scientists. Though this story thread was eventually shelved, working on these guys had been a real joy for me. Gave me a really good excuse to dive into some fascinating historical reference, as well as a good deal of other applicable inspirational material.
