I agree with previous comments, and I can see where Tolkien may have drawn some of his inspiration. Beautiful setting, I wouldn't mind living there. And, I'm not a geologist but that really looks like an ancient volcano there.

I think Peter Jackson did consider it but in comparison to New Zeland for true wilderness it stood no chance. And then theres the very unpredictable weather and lack of accomadation for such a huge cast. Still it would have been nice to see a few shots of the shire at least taken in the lakes.

Yeah I read that He ended up with New Zealand because parts of it look like Britain pre WW11 when the whole country wasn't filled with housing estates. I agree about the wilderness aspect though...maybe The Highlands of Scotland or even North Wales at a push but the mountains in NZ looked fantastic in the films, so good locations there. This would have been perfect as the Shire though
