Description
This photo is done using a technique called "painting with light". This is not a digital manipulation, but was done in camera, pretty much exactly as you see it, other than minor adjustments, cleanup, and toning. This was just done a week ago. A full explanation of the technique can be found on my website FAQ [link] .
This was photographed with a Canon EOS 20D and 28-70mm f2.8 L lens. 30 second exposure. Hand held light. This print is available for purchase on my website.
Administrators: the model is over 18 and I have a signed model release.
[edit] If you like this photo, there are two more photos of this model in this series on my website.

what a dramatic image; the long skirt and his elegant pose makes a dramatic impression as well as your lighting

been in my favs gallery for literally months - I'm having a clearing session, so it's finally coming down, but I set up a 'watch'. Good stuff.

Interesting.
I've done painting with light often, and getting the model to stand that still, even for fifteen seconds is a real challenge.
How did you do it?

Lovely; very creative position. He looks almost like a Greek God's statue. Was that why he was draped over I wonder?

really amazing... is ur model has any reason to pose like that? coz it tells me something from my culture..

No cultural meaning implied here. I just posed him that way because I thought it was aesthetically pleasing. But if you see cultural meaning in this photo, I think that's great.

agh. i LOVE this. from the thumbnail i thought he was a woman. i can't even really explain what it is that makes this so beautiful, but its just so graceful. like the 1st commenter said, the feminity and masculinity are so well blended. he has a beautiful body, the fabric is placed perfectly on his body and it falls perfectly too. i LOVE the pose and the light makes it more flowy.
this is just perfect,

LOL. Nope, the model is definitely a guy. I knew ahead of time that the model had an incredibly masculine body, and I wanted to do something with him that really stood out and grabbed the viewer's attention. If you like this, I have a couple more shots of him in this series on my website.

I do intend to periodically post new images here. My first priority is my own website, where I currently have 40 or so of these "painting with light" images (along with a lot of other photos). I have no intention of posting ALL of them here, but will post select images here on occasion. Or if I have an image I'm waffling on, I might post it here for feedback. I don't understand your comment about "stored a few... pics". I have not withdrawn any of the photos I've posted here.

hmm, for some reason before i didn't realize you had a website, but i just looked there since you suggested, i found even more pictures i liked (which i expected). you should post some more on here, and if you're having trouble deciding which ones to put up i wouldn't mind putting my two cents in. . are you even planning on putting more up? I did see that you stored a few of your pics (at least im asuming since they suddenly arent there) and i figure thats because of the overwhelming amout of notes/views you got? (i read your journal about your DD).

Okay- I saw your Daily Deviation (congrats, btw) and KNEW I had to fav one of your works, but I wanted to look at the rest of your gallery first. The DD is amazing, but I wanted to see what else you had. And I have to say, THIS IS IT! THIS is the one I am going to fav! AWESOME STUFF! I mean REALLY! I don't think I've seen anyone dress a male model like this before- Especially using the paint with light technique! I know of the technique, so I'm very excited that I've come across someone else aware of it! But this is a really fantastic pose and great lighting! It's almost like he's a Greek god, transforming into stone or something! AWESOME! *is absolutely amazed and impressed* Keep up the good work!

there's a slight blur there but i guess you've already seen that.
you mixture of themes is unique, intriguing, surprising and yet comforting at the same time.
you've got a good model there

scottpix In reply to Freedomized [2005-09-19 06:30:11 +0000 UTC]
The shutter was open for a full 30 seconds. The model was trying to hold still the entire time. Of course there is a slight blur. Let's see how long YOU can hold perfectly still. LOL. It is sometimes hard to tell, but ALL of these photos with this lighting style have a little bit of motion blur. It is a normal element of this style. I have actually tried using it intentionally on a few shots, which I will post in the future.

hmmm...30 seconds huh...wow...you have a very good model. if i hold still for 30 seconds i will begin to stone. it'll become a habit if anyone attends my school.

it is - messed around with it with a load of kids and sparklers (btw, 0.0 the sparklers make an AWESOME effect! Try them! the little sparklers they give to kids at parties
if you ever get the chance
) but yeah
working with kids, who didnt exactly GET the concept that they had to stand still for the WHOLE period
and that they didnt have to wave it back and FORTH, just the once was good then do something else...
so i kinda had it pointed out to me in big bold letters that it IS tricky.
btu your whole gallery-everything
but, awesome, professional, perfectly finished and absoloutely beautiful

This is beautiful. I've been interested in this technique for a while (I was recently blown away looking at Tokihiro Sato's work, which is a similar technique). And like the other commentees (is that a word?) I'm also into the masculine/feminine thang. The lines at the back following his arms and the twist of the skirt create a great sense of serene movement.

NoiteInsana [2005-06-11 11:57:25 +0000 UTC]
I imagine him holding still for that long in that position..
wow..
you've worked some powerful lines in this pic that I love, not only the detail with the light matters..
the diagonal that is achieved with the arms is captivating...
the "skirt you used" just softens it again..
wow..
so basically your work resums to a big WOW
Lol glad you share it with us..

scottpix In reply to NoiteInsana [2005-06-14 05:34:50 +0000 UTC]
The bands of light in the background were intentional, and meant to compliment the lines of the pose. The model is actually standing on a stool, which is covered by the fabric.

Wow.. it's a wonder he didn't move during the 30 second exposure time. He must be a ballet dancer or something Great piece, again. And about the feminine/masculine.. i think it's beginning to be everyone's thing nowadays. Just a thought...
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
scottpix In reply to CristianaApostol [2005-05-22 16:25:52 +0000 UTC]
That is part of the trick, finding a pose that a model can hold still for 30 seconds or more. A fair amount of experimentation is involved in finding the right poses, and I often have to do several shots to get one that is still enough to work. They are never perfectly still. If you look closely at the larger version of this, for example, you will see a slight bit of motion blur on the upper hand. Slight movements like this are unavoidable, and I actually like these little imperfections, and consider them part of the overall effect.
Anyway, thanks for your comments and your favs.

CristianaApostol In reply to scottpix [2005-05-22 18:10:56 +0000 UTC]
Yes, i saw the blurryness of the upper hand, but it did not bother me; as you said, it is part of the effect. I think this is a very hard pose to keep, and you should exploit this model as much as you can
You're welcome, you deserve each fav coming your way

i love the juxtaposition of the feminine and masculine aspects here.. the femininity of the cloth and the way it drapes.. next to the strength of his body.. it makes for a breathtaking image.
