Description I did this quite a while ago now, checking my blog it was posted in 2009. I've no idea why I didn't post it here.. possibly because I wasn't as openly surreal back then..

Scott, the days are too few and far between my friend. Appreciate your work with every pass you make, even if it's with old work. Looking forward to the next flash of inspiration. (and I hope you don't mind my answering the question above)

I STILL cannot get Painter's inks to work for me, and lately I've been really trying. I wanna experiment with comic panels and such. Remind me again what settings and brushes you prefer, Scott...pretty please? (I know this is probably the third time I've asked you but I'm old. I blame my leaky memory...*ahem*)

Maybe it's something in my settings, but I can't seem to keep a nice crisp edge when I either erase or pass over my black with white ink.

OH! And I've really been enjoying your latest work, btw!

Ahh I see Dave's replied, thank you Dave!
Yeah the 'inks' that use 'that layer' are shit imo. Stick with what Dave says there and you're sorted

And Chris, you can ask me as many times as ya like m'lady!

Hope all's well with ya

I think I've FINALLY committed 'scratchboard' to memory. Thanks, Scott (and Dave!) The scratchboard effect is exactly what I was shooting for. I'm really itching to do more comic-styled stuff, probably because I MUST get more narrative into my work, and digital inking--while I don't find it easier than traditional--is far more correctable.

Peace out!

Hi quickreaver, if I may answer your question, with all due respect to Scott of course, try the Scratchboard tool (under the pens category), with the brush tracking set as follows: Velocity sliders at whatever, and Pressure settings at max. Keep the opacity at 100%, then simply switch between the black and white swatches to get a pure contrast and very ink-like result. I think you'll find the graphical feel of this particular brush to be most satisfying. Cheers!

Oooh, thanks! I'll give that a whirl and see if it maintains crispness a little better.

Glad you've finally come out of the "surrealist closet"- I quite like the play with negative/positive space.
