Washington A. Roebling II, whose grandfather designed the Brooklyn Bridge and whose father supervised it's building, started The Mercer Automobile Company in 1909 in Mercer County, New Jersey. They had early success in auto racing and Mercer cars became popular with the young and wealthy. Roebling, however, died in the sinking of the Titanic and by 1925 the company was bankrupt.
