Description Years ago, I worked on a strange little german film called Felidae- pretty unusual as animated movies go.
Recently came across it on a movie site, and I was surprised by the viewer responses to it.
Its very definitely not a film for kids.

(truth is, I never saw it)

Sorry for the late reply... You could ask around at the Felidae fan page about an english translation.
And thanks for your comment- this was a color sketch around the time they were coming up with
poster design ideas- rejected, as so many concept roughs are.

Okay cool.Β And also, I can't believe this was rejected. It looks good. And also I watched Felidae around the beginning of August. It's now up their with my favoriteΒ films. I hear a lot of people saying that they wish for Felidae: On the Road to be made into a movie. Well let me go ask the Felidae fan-page.

Wow... you really worked at the movie??!!
I'm co-admin of the FanClub of Felidae on Deviantart! I think it would be amazing if you could reply at some questions about the production of the movie or if you remember some fun details or some comments or decision done about the movie!
Do you think you could reply at a note with some answers by fans? x3
(i've asked to add your art at our group ^^)

Following up on this, having reviewed what I already said-- there have been numerous attempts at making an adult-themed animated feature in the west- but they always suffer from the same limitations, usually bugget and art direction , with the results you have often seen. I think the japanese product benefits from standardised production methods and a viewing public thirsty for more. I'm just watching Perfect Blue at the moment (dubbed in German), and you have to admire the consistent production value, even if the animation is (frankly and IMHO) stiff as a board. Western products like say, the first Heavy Metal movie, are very scattered in their art direction and production values by comparison. Put a stern captain at the wheel though-say, a Brad Bird or a Tim Burton, perhaps- and you'd trot out a blockbuster.

Yeah yeah, you're right. I've wrote you a bit of things thanks note however. However i could also add that's is pretty rare to see animal literature with adult themes. (also mature plot with things that a kid can't understand). I've wrote you in the note some things ^^ Including that Felidae is actually a series of 7 (soon 8) books.

Hi Kooskia,

I could only comment on my role in the production, such as it was. Perhaps the best man to speak to would be Bernie Denk who was the animation director on the project. No doubt you could find him on FaceBook or LinkedIn.

Delighted with a capital Da by all the responses to this- mainly because so many of you want cartoons that are not insulting to your intelligence! I wish the ones who signed the contracts and agreements were not such cowards, but that is the nature of industry, isnt it- caution. Not surprising, but
interesting that in all the world, only the japanese and occasionally the germans, and just once the us of a (fritz the cat) have had the gumption to put an adult oriented czartoon on the plate for the viewing public and succeeded. Maybe the producers will grow some hair in years to come- but I'd starve to death if I held my breath.

Feliade is an awesome film. I first saw it when I was 15. And I agree it's not a kiddie film, but some sites post it as one. Blood and gore, sex, violence, cursing, some homosexuality....how is that for kids?

LOL I guess. But when kids want to see it, then we might have to take precautions. My nine year old godbrothers sister wanted to see it and I told her no. She can bearly see two humans kiss how is she going to react to two cats doing it?

scratchmark In reply to hewhowalksdeath [2011-10-07 13:16:21 +0000 UTC]

thanks for mentioning it- There are few countries that consider their viewing public mature enough to explore adult themes in the animation medium... hope that will change, and soon. the medium is mature enough.

I'm intrigues (as ever) by the drawings that catch alot of page views versus the ones that don't... its generally my simplest, rougher drawings that catch peoples attention, which kinda makes one think twice about getting into the more detailed, fiddly drawings, which I tend to overcook anyway.

Thanks again to one and all for your kind comments- deeply appreciated =0)

I read the book and watched the movie

It is a little familiar with watership down, means - kids should avoid it. I know what IΒ΄m talking about I watched thw movie the first time when I was nine years old

I did read the novel when it came out in '89, but never actually saw the movie ('94?) yet.

I usually don't like movies based on novels if I have read the novel beforehand. It's been a long time though, so might try and catch the movie on TV sometime (it gets shown now and then over here)

Kinda proves something I wish the animation business would take to heart- adults want to see adult themes in animated movies.. seems you can barely pitch a project any more without making it a 'G' rating.
I think its very much a US predilection. Europe, the UK, Canada and Oz would never have a problem with making cartoons just for adults.

soruna [2009-01-05 11:33:36 +0000 UTC]

nice drawing though

it was rated uuh.. i dunno how it is called, but you're allowed to see the movie if you're at least twelve...

i saw it on TV with like 9 or stuff and especially one scene gave me the creeps...i was kinda afraid my cat could just start talking to me afterwards....

try to watch it if you can, i guess there should be a version with english subtitles on the internet somewehere (i recommend the german version, since they got some very popular voice actors for it.)

yep, I was one of the layout supervisors on the movie. Have a look at my gallery some time, I have made alot of movies and tv shows.
and you're right- takes alot of practice to draw cats properly.
Still, some kinds of practice are more fun than others
