Back from an unexpected sojourn, bearing good tidings and birds (--okay, this one's not so much a bird , rather a tennis ball with a dog wrapped around it.)This is one of the things I painted while I was away, in-between finishing up my piece for the 2012 Werewolf Calender (here's the sketch in case you missed it--I'll post the final painting sometime later this year!)

Do you do anything to the wood before you paint on it? To get the paint to properly adhere and the like (not the obvious sanding).

No, I generally just start painting. I typically use chopped up scraps of compressed/manufactured wood, which hold the paint fine. If I used a rougher "real wood" scrap, like pine or something, I'd probably prime it before hand. :]
