AMARYLLIS

Something inside of Ryll broke.

As the black wolf came down in the middle of the clearing with an earth-trembling thump, Aira clutched in his jaws, Ryll felt a flame burst to life in her chest. Her sister’s sides were heaving erratically, her eyes wide and jaws twitching open and shut. The black wolf with red eyes dropped Aira to the ground and placed a paw on her throat, snarling down at her. She recognized him, barely. He was a dios, and one who kept to the outskirts of the pack. He did not mingle much, and now she knew why. His paw pressed hard into Aira’s throat, silencing the rasping gurgle she was making.

Silently Ryll lunged forward.

The dios did not seemed to have noticed her prior to that point, or he did not seem to care. The only thought in her mind at that point was to get between him and her sister, to stop the bloodshed. She struck him in the side, unbalancing him. His paws came off of Aira, his snarling head whipped around to face Ryll as she reared up to push him away again.

She got one good, close look at his wide, uncannily crimson eyes before he snapped his jaws shut around her foreleg. His head twisted and her world spun as the other wolf tossed her into the air.

Ryll felt a moment of weightlessness before she reconnected with the ground. All of the wind whistled from her lungs. She felt something crack in her chest. Shock and pain forced her jaws open, but no sound emerged. The red-eyed dios stood staring at her for a moment before baring his fangs and turning slowly towards her sister. Aira lay mostly still. Her sides moved agonally. Ryll’s chest tightened, horror setting into her bones. She wheezed and choked until air rushed into her lungs once more. The red-eyed dios was lowering his head, jaws opening towards Aira’s throat.

Ryll staggered to her feet, a scream building in her throat. I have to get between them.

She lurched forward, rammed into the dios. He unbalanced, surprise evident in his face. Ryll lunged in between her fallen sister and her pack mate, head low.

“Stop! Stop! You’re killing her!!!”

To her shock, the wolf froze. His lips remained peeled back from his fangs, his eyes blazing. His ears slowly swiveled back as if he were listening to something in the woods behind him. Ryll’s legs trembled beneath her. He uttered one more snarl, then turned and, as quickly as he had come, bounded away into the undergrowth and the darkness.

Ryll’s trembling legs gave way beneath her. She collapsed by her sister’s side, her head falling limply next to Aira’s muzzle. There was blood trickling out of the side of her sister’s open jaws in small rivulets. Aira’s eyes were slightly open. Ryll could feel the irregular puff of shallow breath against her muzzle. The small puffs grew slower.

“Aira…?” She wheezed, pain of a different kind tightening her chest. “Aira….?”

A rattling sound died in Aira’s throat. Her sister’s eyes glazed over.

Ryll’s throat constricted.

“Aira?”

The pain that came with her sister’s final breath was so great that she found her own chest stilled.
She couldn’t even cry.
