Well, I can't say that I've followed you all that much...and 20 is somewhat impressive (More than I'd do in 5 years).
The common way these days is fetish related (The one rising rapidly in popularity is the size fetish. I.E. Giantess and Giants). Another way is...somewhat related to the previous reason. "Tits" (Sad, but that's how the minds of most people work)
Of course, character development does help...but what helps that along is the plot. Normally if you have a plot and need for characters, the character development will take care of itself...just make sure that none of them are duplicates of anyone else you have (to prevent confusion).
Your character designs are impressive, and I've seen that you've done backgrounds every here and there (Which I know is hard).
Also....WTF? Is that Kirby? Or...some kind of pink dog? O_o;;
