Story
Orla brought Legolas to a stop at the crest of the hill. He snorted and stamped his foot, clearly displeased that she wanted him to stand still while he was content to wander closer towards the yummy looking green grass. She patted his neck. “Oh quit being dramatic, you act like the grass back at the stable’s isn’t any good.” Her only response was another loud snort. She smiled and shook her head, and then proceeded to carefully observe the surrounding area. The grass blew softly in a very gently breeze and the atmosphere was quiet and calm. Perfect for finding wild horses, who would spook at large amounts of activity. But not a hoof print could be seen, or the swish of a tail or the munching of a hungry mouth. She glanced up at the sky and beheld the large clouds that were slowly starting to gather. Remaining optimistic became more difficult as she realized it would soon begin to storm. But, she hadn’t run out of time to find the wild Nordanners just yet. She tapped Legolas’ sides very gently, but he threw his head down dramatically – apparently he’d decided he would rather stand put than move forward. She couldn’t help but roll her eyes. He begrudgingly began to step forward, and quickly settled again into a calm walk. She didn’t take her eyes off the surrounding area, scanning fervently for evidence of the wild horses. Suddenly Legolas stopped dead in his tracks, and she gasped – she’d been so focused on searching she wasn’t pay enough attention to the one horse she should be. She shifted back into a better posture on the saddle and then leaned against his neck. “Sorry boy – I guess I’m just getting a little impatient. I don’t want to go him without even seeing” – her words fell away from her mouth and she looked ahead in mute awe. Two absolutely beautiful Nordanners, both very strong and healthy looking, were very close to them, enjoying the sweet dew-covered grass. They took no notice to horse nor rider, and acted as though there wasn’t a single care in the world that could take them away from their serenity. But she knew better – these magnificent creatures were wild and independent. They were alert, and could take care of themselves, no matter how calm they may look. Legolas’ ears were standing straight up as he watched them with as much intensity as his rider did. He didn’t know what to make of them, but he was excited to see fellow Nordanners. He whinnied a loud greeting. Orla gasped – so much for remaining hidden, she thought, and braced herself for the disappointing sight of two tails disappearing fast as lightning across the hills. But instead of bolting at realizing there was an intruder in their midst, the horses lifted their heads and looked at them. It became a four-way staring match as each horse (and one rider) refused to look away to see what the other would do. After several moments frozen on the spot, Legolas appeared to become bored first. He cocked his back leg lazily and yawned. Something about this got the other horse’s attention, and before Orla’s eyes they seemed to become less tense. They didn’t begin to graze again, but their tails began to swish, and their ears flopped backwards and forwards with curiosity, taking in the full situation. The stallion took a gently step towards them, and the mare nickered as if asking what he was doing. But as a few more moments passed, she dropped her head again and began to graze, content knowing she had the stallion in between her and the strangers. And the stallion, while remaining quite alert, dropped his head for a couple mouthfuls here and there too as he observed them. “It’s wonderful!” Orla breathed quietly. “Look, Legolas, they aren’t really that afraid of us…I wonder, if maybe we remained here long enough, they would approach us?” Orla knew Legolas wouldn’t answer her, but he was the only one there to talk to. And the best part of talking to a horse was that horses couldn’t tell terrible jokes or give awful advice, so she could voice her thoughts in peace. But peace was a fragile thing, and in a swift moment everything changed. With no warning, the grass next to the wild horses rustled, and with a noise that seemed huge in what had been an extremely quiet moment, two birds appeared from nowhere and took to the air. The motion was swift and startling, catching them all off guard. Legolas hopped back out of surprise and put his ears back, expressing his displeasure at the whole situation. “No…” Orla breathed as the horses suddenly spun from where they stood. The mare threw her back end up in the air and gave a powerful kick, warding off an invisible predator. With the pounding of hooves trampling the grass the two horses dashed away in a streak of color. They knew these hills deep in their hearts and could fly like the wind without fear of misstep or tripping – this was their home. Their place. Orla refused to frighten them further, but she wanted to see where they went. She cued Legolas into a slow canter and followed at a distance, watching intently as the two horses galloped away. They were so beautiful to look at, so free and majestic. Ugh, she thought to herself, that’s the kind of thing they’d write on a horse posted for a four-year-old girl’s wall. But she couldn’t help it – there was something in watching the beautiful creatures run that reminded her of being young and how romanticized horses had been. Back then she didn’t see much besides the beauty – it had taken awhile for her to learn there was so much more to horses than looking glamorous. But it had only made her love them more. She smiled as the wild horses finally disappeared over a hill, and hoped very much she would get to see them again.

LOL I wish I jumped on the event sooner - after all, I have always wanted a starter Nordanner But I am super excited about the chimera, I think it would be awesome if I got to take him home! I am also tempted to enter for the pumpkin, but competition's gonna be intense - there are already so many entries for him O.o
