Description Oculapus (tentacled spy) : created from mollusk tissues, this intelligent mutant has a highly sophisticated sense of vision and can telepathically transmit what it sees over many miles. With the ability to camoflage itself, slip through tight crevasses and expel a smoke-screen of vaporous ink, it is the ultimate surveillance monster and information gatherer. Unfortunately, it suffers from an overwhelming fear of physical harm and will not leave the safety of dark, enclosed spaces unless provided with some form of sturdy protection. Antique diving helmets accommodate it perfectly, and have made a return to mass production especially for these clever but panicky monsters.

Grimgug (zombie spawn) : this rare, roughly elephant-sized creature usually develops in the womb of a zombie that died during pregnancy, though cases of actual zombie "matings" are not unheard of and may also result in the birth of a Grimgug. With the mind of a perpetually happy infant and no sense of pain, it is one of the cruelest and most unruly of all monsters. It can and will devour any organic material it can get its claws on, and is always in the mood to "play"; a mood that has been known to level villages. It has an urge to suckle, and prefers to use live humans or zombies as "pacifiers".

Horribloom (hypnotic weed) : this plant-based monster grows in areas of lingering psychic energy, especially where a powerful psionicist has passed away. It may even demonstrate personality fragments of the deceased, and has in some cases continued with his or her goals. It feeds on mental energy, and can control the minds and bodies of those it is preying upon. When angered, it can squirt a stream of pungent-smelling, mildly corrosive "tears" from the corner of its massive eyelid.

Scolomorph: a fusion between human and centipede. This cunning predator moves with blinding speed as it expertly tracks prey by vibration alone. If its powerful, razor-sharp jaws aren't enough, its serrated tongue and needle-like limbs are loaded with flesh-eating venom, and strands of foul-smelling, powerfully adhesive mucus can be sprayed in a criss-crossing pattern from glands behind its anus.

Undercreep (ghoul-worm) : ranging from inches to kilometers in length, the Undercreep are ancient worms mutated by a variation of the disease that created zombies and vampires. It is said that if every Undercreep rose above ground at once, they would blanket the planet. Luckily, they prefer a cannibalistic diet, and will only rarely surface for a more exotic meal. Vampires are their preferred snack, apparently carrying an aroma they find irresistible. A thin coating of acid allows them to burrow easily through soft materials.

Vault (nuclear phantom) : this eerie interdimensional being feeds on cerebrospinal fluid through its curious syringe-like claw, injecting paralyzing chemicals through its other appendage. Close proximity to the Vault is harmless, but physical contact causes radiation poisoning. It cannot be captured by video or photograph, appearing on film only as a scrambled cloud of multicolored light.

The idea of mating zombies producing offspring was pioneer'd by Peter Jackson in the movie Dead-Alive of demented do0m. I could be mistaken, but that's the earliest example (1990) I can think of in zombie lore to include that concept.

I was also thinking of Japan's beloved goblin-boy hero, Kitarou, who came to term and was born out of his mother's buried corpse. He doesn't become a giant hideous monster or anything, but he does lack an eyeball.

So his dad rides around in the empty socket!

What with his dad being a mummy that rotted away until only a talking eyeball remained.

Which eyeball is he?

He rides in the left socket, but it's always covered by Kitarou's hair. His dad has a tiny humanoid body so he jumps out oftentimes and does stuff. He enjoys tea, but having no mouth, he has to bathe in it.

It's pretty much the best thing Japan ever made.

other than the NES, Super NES, the Ko0palings, and Faxanadu, even?

There is nothing that can compare to an eyeball taking a bath in tea.

Nah I originally wanted to draw it like a marine clam-worm but no matter how I did the multi-tentacled head it just didn't look good, so I did a cheap mutant puffy-eyed head like I stick on tons of things

DoctorBollocks In reply to scythemantis [2007-03-09 19:07:59 +0000 UTC]

Well that's good enough for me, still looks good. Now for a Clam monster itself there's that one from StarFox64 tht'd be a good reference, or do something like Critters or CHUD or better yet a Mbwun or Wrinkler from The Relic and Reliquary.

Actually I have a clam monster in the vampire batches, "Clampire".

What I mean by "clam worm" is an actual animal called a clam-worm which has a pincer-tipped proboscis (a little like what I've given the new underground) and clusters of tentacles around its head and down its sides. That was all too difficult to draw without it looking crappy

DoctorBollocks In reply to scythemantis [2007-03-10 19:28:33 +0000 UTC]

Really? Have you drawn that yet?
And I know exctly what you mean by "difficult to draw without it lookign crappy" which happens everything I try to go insectoid.

Yeah clampire is in the very first batch of "planktonic" vampires. You just can't see the shell very clearly behind its giant, gelatinous wings (based on marine snail larvae)

...But I plan to draw it again in my current level of detail sometime, and will probably give it a much slicker design with the same concept.

They're so delightfully unpleasant! I particularly like Grimgug and Vault. Is Vault based on anything in particular? The basic design looks really familiar to me.

scythemantis In reply to MrEquator [2007-02-24 17:04:31 +0000 UTC]

It's based on the Flatwoods Monster, though I'm actually replacing vault in this batch with something else soon because I have a very different, much more satisfying idea for a Flatwoods-Monster-Necromon.

Undercreep was a last-minute idea. I really wanted to have something more bizarre and unique but I couldn't draw any of my other ideas well enough to my liking so I decided to just do a worm thing because it was inevitable that there be one anyway. It still feels like a "filler" monster to me but I guess it's a good one if everyone likes it.

Undercreep lo0ks kind of a lot like the monster from 'The Deadly Spawn'! -> [link] -> Oh, and I have the collector's edition on DVD!

scythemantis In reply to IggyHazard [2005-07-12 20:37:26 +0000 UTC]

It's a combination of the deadly spawn and a boss from Splatterhouse, though it maybe kinda looks TOO much like the spawn.

You can buy a big puppy of the deadly spawn from bumpinthenightproductions.com

How did I know you would mention that boss from 'Splatterhouse 2'?! Because I forgot to mention it, that's why! I didn't think of it til after I posted.

FunFact: The first boss from 'Splatterhouse 2' was inspired by 'The Dead Spawn'. Alternate titles for 'The Deadly Spawn' include: 'Return of the Alien: The Deadly Spawn' and 'Return of the Alien's Deadly Spawn'.

YEEK! Wow, the sixth one you added is great. XD Grimgug kind of creeps me out, but otherwise, I LOVE Horribloom (obligatory luff for plantmonsters, ahoy!), Scolomorph (reminds me of the caterpillars I showed you, even though you say centipede XD), and Undercreep. While I don't have a strong liking for Vault in a general way, I have to admit you did a REALLY good job drawing him. LUFF THEM!
