Description
Prepare for more necromon batches with a particular "theme"...this one? Planktonic vampires.Vampires in the world of Mortasheen are very different from the traditional undead variety. Like mad cow disease in the real world, they are the result of an infectious abnormality in a natural protein. As they do not age, breathe, or naturally reproduce, vampires are technically no longer "alive", but should rather be considered incredibly sophisticated *viral bodies*. Luckily, their feeding habits only pass down the infection during their reproductive phase, which, like certain real-world organisms, coincides with the full moon.
The vampire protein is said to have originated in the abyssal trenches of the primordial sea, and only reached the surface world in recent millenia. This theory is supported by what has been dubbed the Blood Sea; a vast network of salt lakes where even the water itself appears to thirst for blood due to billions upon billions of microscopic vampires...from mutated fish-fry to parasitic diatoms.
But not all the blood sea's plankton are microscopic...
----------------------------------
Bloodbell (jellyfish-vampire) : with its impenetrable, crystalline shell, this vampiric cnidarian is eons more advanced than its living counterparts. Like a miniature starship, it whirls through the air, flashing brilliant patterns of light from within its translucent body. When prey is in reach, it launches dozens of fragile but lethal tentacles from its porous body, each lined with stinging cells that have adapted to drain blood as they inject their venom, like billions of tiny spider fangs.
Clampire (mussel vampire) : the body of this ghoulish bivalve is filled with a highly buoyant gas that allows it to swim and even fly on its sticky, eye-rimmed "lips", which are also employed in ensnaring prey.
Crawvire (lobster vampire) : paper-thin and totally transparent, the Crawvire can be difficult to spot as it floats quietly through air or water in search of prey. When threatened in the wild, it expels a cloud of luminous vapor that other vampires can home in on from miles away.
Pentasite (starfish vampire) : an amazingly agile echinoderm mutation with a highly evolved muscle structure and a true brain. Rasps a hole in prey and reaches inside with its own stomach.
Necrozoa (crab vampire) : resembling a crab in its larval state, the Necrozoa can float in air much like the Crawvire, but is a faster and more direct hunter. It is often seen wearing the stiffened, empty skin of recent prey.
Leech-angel (snail vampire) : once a marine snail, now a tiny but extremely deadly flying predator. Multicolored photophores lining its internal shell create a mesmerizing light show that somehow fools prey into seeing more than one leech-angel.

I think the Bloodbell, Necrozoa, and Leach Angel are all superior to the later versions.

Necrozoa only changed much in pose and in spine length, I made it less chunky. Chunky is fun though...there's a lot of vampires I keep wanting to change.

I mainly like its cicada nymph-like forelimbs, which look different in the new one.

This has got to be one of your best batches yet, both in terms of concept, general design, and in terms of the quality of the art itself! The written concept for the whole thing in general is also adorable, both from my weird-loving perspective, and from my marine-bio perspective. XD Plus, Viral Vampirism=win. Of this batch, I adore Crawvire and Pentasite the most (STARFISH EYES).
I have a "Blood Sea" in one of my worlds, too, but that's so-named because it's actually made out of blood instead of water. XD

Wow, the blood sea would make for an excellent fantasy/horror novel situation.
