Description This was a project for my current drawing class, the idea was to "capture the essence" of water. This piece was done by laying a charcoal ground and erasing the drawing, then adding white chalk pastel afterward. I'm reasonably pleased with this piece.

wow we have to do exactly the same thing in our drawing class...i dont have a problem with the erasing and chalk pastel stuff..but i just can't do the darker parts with the charcoal that are supposed to be the waves.. i just can't get it right..it always looks strange..any tips? ((;

I had a really hard time with that also. I remember going to bed frustrated the night before it was due. I was pleasantly surprised when I looked at it the following morning. Art is funny like that sometimes. My advice, for what it's worth: use a photo as reference. Also, I find walking away from a piece when it starts to look odd useful. You'll likely see what's wrong immediately when you return to it with fresh eyes

Ha ! I experienced exactly the same..
I was so upset, I thought I would get a bad mark , but the week after when i looked at it again i was like "what the .." it looked completely different to me, just because not looking at it for a few days.. crazy haha (:

Thank you! Unfortunately my prof at the time had a real hate on for realism, but I'm pleased enough with the outcome to make up for how much he disliked my style

your prof's preferences shouldn't affect you. I think you did wonderful job and you could draw great waterscapes!
