 Vigilant | Thick-skinned | Reverent  | Stoical | Stern | Reclusive | Vengeful | Overcritical

Vigilant// keeping careful watch for possible danger or difficulties
Reva has learned to observe everything: not only what can be seen, but also what can be inferred. Crackling leaves, rustling tree branches, footprints, torn bark, disturbed foliage, animal cries-- Reva must analyze it all. This skill has proven extremely useful as a scout.

Thick-skinned// insensitive to criticism or insults
Being a small mare in the War-Forged herd is not exactly advantageous. Despite this, Reva has become an admirable scout. She realized she needed to block out those saying she couldn't succeed, and instead listened to her inner voice that told her to keep going. Call her short, call her weak-- it is unlikely such put-downs will ever affect her.

Reverent// feeling or showing deep and solemn respect
Reva isn't necessarily respectful to all equines she meets; if she feels you deserve it, she will act kindly towards you. However, her feelings toward nature are ones of complete deference. The plants, the animals, the vast landscapes-- it all fills her with such wonder and awe that she knows Kaia must exist. Reva doesn't pray very often, but she thanks the earth goddess periodically for both her blessing and the earth.

Stoical// enduring pain and hardship without showing one's feelings or complaining
Some who have been around her would swear Reva is made of stone. Some have seen her get severely injured, like when part of her ear was torn off, and not even flinch. Nothing can get in the way of her primary goal (whatever it may be at the time). If something goes wrong, it will be fixed, and she will continue. If it cannot be fixed, she will move on. She is always efficient, always striving forward.

Stern// serious and unrelenting, especially in the assertion of authority and exercise of discipline
In her dealings with others, Reva is a no-nonsense, all-business type of mare. With competent companions, she will act in a fair, yet still solemn manner. If those she must deal with are not taking the job seriously, she will set them straight. Reva has some patience for inexperience (foals, for example) if their best effort is put forth, but she will not tolerate repeated mistakes, especially if they are purposeful errors.

Reclusive// avoiding the company of other people; solitary
Reva only interacts with others when it is necessary. She believes getting involved with the affairs of others brings too much complexity, and often strife. Thus, she has decided social interaction is rarely worth the outcomes. Deep down, she might long for companionship, but this desire has been snuffed out.

Vengeful// seeking to harm someone in return for a perceived injury
It takes a substantial wrongdoing to perturb Reva, but when you do, she will make you regret it. Reva can only exercise mercy to a certain degree; once you go past that, she will be on a war path to make you pay for whatever you did. She has been told to hold back in many situations, but she sometimes can't seem to forego the "eye for an eye" policy.

Overcritical // inclined to find fault too readily

A side-effect of such harsh training and always trying to be at the top of her game, Reva is very judgmental of herself and others. It is not that she intends to offend (usually), but she tends to lack the ability to put things kindly, so her suggestions come off as rather . . . accusatory. She simply sees ways things could improve and does her best to fix them, but she is often overzealous and pushes herself and others past the limit.

HistoryPre-Birth- Birth:

She was wed to him out of necessity. As soon as they had approval and the dowry was paid, Avani, who came from a family of poor farmers, and Jonas, who worked as a medic, were married. Not knowing what to expect from her new husband, Avani went right to work planting a garden, cooking, and cleaning their small cottage until it was spotless. Jonas almost seemed amused with her flurry of activities and let it go on for a few days before he told her to slow it down and began to assist her. Avani was shocked by his kindness; she had the impression that this stoic, somewhat older stallion expected perfection and complete subservience from her. She was relieved.

What began as an arranged marriage slowly became mutual respect, and then dependence on one another . . . perhaps even love. Once they felt they could provide, the couple sought out the warlord to be granted permission for Avani to bear a child. They were in luck. In spring of the following year a healthy filly was born. The small family was doing well; Avani's garden was productive and their daughter Emilia was growing steadily.

Once their first child was around two and a half years old, they again got consent from their leader and soon Avani was bearing another foal. However, this pregnancy would not be as easy; that winter was a harsh one, and Avani fell ill. Jonas was terribly concerned for both his wife's health and their unborn baby's. He was doing all he could as a medic, but her sickness did not seem to be abating as quickly as he had hoped. Neither unicorn was particularly religious, but both Avani and Jonas found themselves pleading with Kaia that winter. It seemed like a miracle when Avani suddenly started to feel better after ailing for a week and a half. Avani and Jonas praised Kaia, intensely grateful, but both remained concerned about the foal.
                                                                                                           _

It was early summer when Reva was born. Jonas was on edge throughout the whole process, perhaps even more so than the mother herself. The birth went smoothly, but once the foal was out, both parents noticed how tiny she was. The days and weeks following Reva's birth were filled with worrying from her parents, but she seemed perfectly healthy. Just really small.

Childhood:

Reva was as most other foals are: curious, playful, active. Jonas and Avani were glad their two daughters got along so well; they were nearly inseparable. Reva followed Emilia around everywhere and played outside with her sister every day. It was a typical day when a concerned Emilia approached her parents.

    "I think . . . I think there's something wrong with Reva," she said.
Jonas immediately got up and Avani came in from the kitchen. "What do you mean, Emilia?" Jonas asked.
The filly shifted, unsure of what to say. ". . . Well, when we're playing . . . She just kind of . . changes? I thought maybe I was seeing things, but. . . I think it's her."

Jonas told Emilia to go play with Reva again so they could watch and see what she meant. And Emilia was correct. As they play-fought, Reva would dodge and weave away from her sister inexplicably, her body contorting ever so slightly, but impossibly. She didn't even seem aware of what she was doing. After watching in amazement for a while, her parents decided they would tell Reva.

_

"Reva, you have a gift," Avani said gently. Reva tilted her head slightly, not sure what her parents meant.
"Sometimes Kaia chooses to give blessings to horses very early in their lives. In your case, you were born with one," Jonas told his younger daughter.
"I have a blessing?" Reva whispered.
"You seem to be able to shape shift," Avani continued, "but at this point it is unlikely you have much control over it. Your father and I thought it best to tell you."

Reva nodded, unsure of what this blessing meant for her. It would, at least, explain why her sister could never touch her when they sparred. Emilia would be relieved to hear that, she was sure.

When Emilia was 8 and Reva was 5, Avani gave birth to another foal, this time a boy named Sunder. Despite her small size, Reva was incredibly protective of her baby brother. She was beginning to deal with some teasing and self-doubt because of her small stature, so looking after Sunder gave her a respite from that.

                                                                                                            _

Beginning to kindle inside of Reva was a love for nature. Nearly all of her waking moments were spent outdoors. She frequently helped her father gather medicinal herbs, and he would inform her about all sorts of things on these trips. It seemed to Reva that her parents held endless pools of wisdom about the natural world, as every time she spent time with them she would learn something new.

There was one day where Reva and Sunder were exploring the woods near their home when Reva spotted a large bird's nest in a tree. The way the branches were configured allowed Reva to clumsily ascend the tree by utilizing her blessing. She was viewing the chicks and describing them to her brother, who was still on the ground, when the chicks' mother arrived to defend her distressed babies. Reva tried to scramble back down the tree, but lost control and fell several feet. Sunder was already running, but hesitated when he looked back and saw Reva struggling to get up. The mother hawk swooped down as Reva got on her hooves. In fear, she reared back, trying to block the large bird, but it managed to grab onto her chest. The sharp talons burned like fire. Reva managed to shake off the bird and galloped back to the house with Sunder in tow.

As her father patched up the deep scratches on her chest, Reva was contemplating her love for nature. She recalled what her father had told her one day in the forest when she had asked why some of the same exact plants were taller than others.

"Survival of the fittest," he had said. "Those taller plants are getting more sunlight than the smaller ones by blocking them out. Only the strong plants will live."

Nature was not to be loved or feared, she decided. It was to be respected.

Teenage Years:

Reva was growing steadily into a young mare, though she still remained rather small. Even Sunder had surpassed her in height, but she tried not to let it bother her. Whenever anyone annoyed her, a sharp glare was usually enough to shut them up. If not, a jab from her horn definitely would.

There was one day where Reva was helping her mother pick the garden and she saw a group of Raiders going by in the distance, likely to some exciting and important mission.

"Could I be a raider, mom?" the young unicorn asked.
Avani looked up from the ground. "Oh, honey, I don't think there's ever been a female raider."
Reva furrowed her brow. "Well, I could be the first one," she retorted.
Avani sighed. "Reva, there's a reason they're almost always stallions. The Raiders have to be . . . very big and strong."
Reva continued to work in silence, contemplating this. It was then she had another idea. "What about a scout? They don't have to be as big. I could do that."
Her mother chuckled. "I suppose that would be more feasible, but it would be a lot of work, Reva."
"I'm not afraid to work," Reva said.

She began to spend the majority of her days out in the wilderness, exploring, observing, and training. She would still help her parents, but Reva's primary focus was her training. Building endurance, agility. Sharpening both her mind and body. She began to spar with larger, tougher opponents. Because of her size, speed, and blessing, she was able to dodge most blows, but still earned several scars. She began to view her size as an advantage and grew more confident in her skills.

She was ready.

Adulthood:

Reva left her parents once she became a Scout and has her own small house closer to the mountains. Emilia got married and started her own farm, and Sunder is off selling his wares somewhere.

Reva takes her role as a scout very seriously. She cooperates well with others when necessary, but spends most of her time alone. She is not lonely, however, for she has nature to keep her company. There is nothing she would rather be doing than roaming around, surveying the land of Onea around her. She endures all hardships, for nature is resilient, and she too has the strength to carry on.
