I recently watched the series, completely blind in terms of spoilers except in the sense that I'd heard this wasn't your typical magical-girl series and to prepare for a major mindblow. After two episodes I was interested, but wondering what all the fuss was about; it seemed pretty normal to me.
Then came episode three.
I remember staring at my screen blankly for a few minutes afterward, waiting for another shoe to drop, waiting for someone to tell me I really didn't just see what it looked like I just saw. But of course, that never came. But even before it happened, Mami's story of how she became a Puella Magi and of the dark side of being a magical girl made me see and appreciate her in a whole new light.
This is a very long-winded buildup to me saying that I think you've captured the essential melancholy of Mami -- the appropriate expression would be "smiling through your tears" -- in your pic here. Well done.
