Description Alright yes I know now that LD isn't as innocent as I though she was. I had to go re-watch the episode. The only reason I might have missed the part where she didn't care about the deaths of the mane 6 is because I do blind commentaries of the new mlp episodes (First time reactions). Sometimes I try to think of a comment and miss parts of the episode because I wasn't listening.

As for RD's wing I guess I didn't understand the situation. I didn't understand LD's leadership role in which she had to tell RD what to. It's weird, I was in RD's situation before in band and I understood leadership then, that's beside the point though. Just call me naive

I know the kicking out was extreme, but that's what it looked like to me. Besides this stuff happens and I want to give a message of hope to people that have experience something similar.

At the moment I still feel sympathy for LD. I've gotten comments about how LD is an evil character and she deserved being kicked out. I think people like her should be given a chance. There are people out there that believe that how they behave is normal. You could imagine the shock that they'd face when they realize that the way they lived all their life was inappropriate. Some people really can't feel empathy and that gets them in trouble at times, as you can tell with LD. LD is not a bad character, she just makes mistakes like the rest of us.

I'm glad you guys all liked the 1st part and sorry if I couldn't respond to you all, but there were A TON of messages. I took about over half of my day answering comments which most of them were addressing the same issues. Thanks anyways guys.

Yeah, I agree. The only cartoons that would be like that were the old Disney animated movies. I think Lion King would be the perfect example and that was my all time favorite when I was a kid.

On interpretation about the conflict in that episode can be as it follows: LD and RD are characters with similar characteristics, but put toghether to show the contrast between having skills and being a jerk. Through friendship RD has somehow comprehended that sometimes being the best fitted for something doesn't mean to be the first or the fastest, while LD has a more utilitarian approach: to win and excell at all costs.

Now during assignation of teams LD seems to be chosen to lead because of the attitude LD displayed at tests: assertive, always looking to give an extra to what standards ask (let's face it, RD did it fine, but her display of skills wasn't something that outstanding).

So i can get the idea that RD was labeled wing pony in order to learn from LD to give that "little extra" in her performance. Unfortunately skill is not always tied to judgement and LD, although very skilled, hasn't the mentality of a leader (which is precisely to lead, to set how things have to be done and how by the team to achieve success, bond and get better and not only do all the things first).

That's why the script has the sequence of the wing. It shows that LD is very skilled, but doesn't care about being part of a team. RD has a hard time to follow LD when it comes to sudden crazy maneouvers and LD never waits to see if RD is able (or comfortable) doing them (and not even to listen to some advice).

LD is not bad, but is reckless and although sometimes it is prized in leadership a strong, outstanding personality who seems to have all answers in fact such cult to personality has proven through history to be the milestone of tragedies (Custer's last ride, The Maginot line fiasco, Santa Anna's defeat in the Mexican-Texan war).

The fact that LD is not moved by the almost tragedy of the Mane six is basically because nothing actually happened in the end. The sky was clean and tragedy was averted so... why to bother? Pretty much a mentality of an alcoholic who dirves drunk back home, almost crashes many times, but in the end he gets in one piece to home. Was he drunk? Yes. Almost dies? Yes. Something bad happened? No, so why the fuzz?

In the end RD showed a higher morale attitude and strength to stand up and speak his mind (which is an interesting thing I think quite few people got: being the second in comand or under someone's command doesn't mean following orders blindly) and showed he has more qualities of a leader than just the skills.

Now, I recall LD being humiliated and demoted, but not quite being expelled (perhaps I just erased part of the sequence of my memory where it is actually stated ).

I have to say it was catharthic to see a jerk have what it deserved (it always is), but the truth is that the best punishment for a jerk is to learn from its mistakes, as you stated (thus more serious situations can be avoided in the future).

She still deserved getting expelled, she nearly killed civilians as a result of her own recklessness. That's like a US Marine killing civilians even though he's aiming at a terrorist.

It's good to see that this didn't turn out the way I imagined.

Even though she was shamed as the Academy, she turned it around and found success elsewhere.

Nice ending!

LD is a great character.... I just hate how ppl think she's the worst. Honest to god I think she didn't even see the mane 6 before she spoke, bragging about her achieviment. She was probably just flying somewhere and didn't see them. She and extreme daredevil... which makes her different from RD, I think she would over push herself to get great achievements.

It's a good story, but I maintain the position that LD's punishment wasn't final. It was a week's worth of training at the Academy. Getting sent home does not imply you cannot ever come back. Spitfire liked her at first, and she has talent. There's no reason to assume there won't be a next time for her. Still, moving story and comic.

And yeah, Lightning Dust struck me as what Rainbow Dash might have turned into if she'd never met Fluttershy. I agree that change is possible, and sometimes people genuinely don't know when they're doing something wrong.

That whole her not caring about their falling was not 100% shown. She did give a face of being felt under pressure when RD brought that up. That episode was mostly bad writing imho. She was supposed to be demoted and not kicked out. Either case, I loved the first strip. Mistakes happen. You live you learn.

Well, I’m not sure how many people figured out the problem with RD’s wing. RD may be an excellent flier, but in the episode you could tell she was trying to see around LD. If you can’t see where you’re going, bad things can happen, (but RD could’ve slowed down herself as per her own suggestion).

No good defense could be given to LD’s other actions though. I like the turn this comic seems to have taken.

SDSilva94 In reply to adamlhumphreys [2012-12-22 18:56:11 +0000 UTC]

The answer for that question actually lies in our reality in planes (obvioulsy) . The people in the cockpit of a plane has ranks: the captain (leader pony) and copilot/first officer (wing pony).

Almost all the history of aviation the idea was that the captain was the most skilled and experienced pilot in the cabin and that the first officer was the trainee, feeding on the knwoledge of the captain, thus creating a working atmosphere of fear and tension because How would the youngest inexperienced member of the crew contradict the judgement of the leader? The non written rule was that the "wing pony" had to follow and obey the "leader pony" because he knew what he was doing and that what the leader was doing was right.

This mentality resulted in a number of serious accidents that led to a change of work dynamics in aviation (including the worst accident aviation has seen when two Boeing 747's collided in an airstrip at Tenerife).

Since then, although the copilot is still under the lessons and commands of the captain, airlines try to ensure both pilots understand they are equal when it comes to fly the plane, thus if the copilot notices the captain is doing something that puts the aircraft at risk, he can take immediately the control of the plane and avert a dangerous situation.

RD and LD are then tied for this bond of leader - subordinate in which LD thinks being a leader means do whatever he/she wants and RD pressumes her duty is to follow the leader in any crazyness he/she might come up with (because you know, LD is the leader for a reason and RD actually thinks he was selected wing pony because she is not as good as expected, thus creating the fear of speaking her mind out; you actually see that when she actually does it, she quits thinking her duty as wing pony was to be quiet and follow orders).

After all this speech, happy seasons for you both .

I had a different idea for Lightning Dust as part of this series I thought of concerning the children of the mane six and how they got thier cutie marks. After getting thrown out of the academy Dust discovered a griffin sport called Skyball joined a group of pegasus who wanted to introduce the game to Equestria, eventually becoming one of the most recognized professional players in country.

Dash's son, Wind Racer, would have had some self esteem issues that led him to bullying some of the other kids at school and his parents thought by making him join the school Skyball team's inagrual season thinking it would teach him responibility. In the opening game against a griffin school where Gilda's daughter played (along with this huge griffin goon whose parents encourages his bad behavior) Dust would have been a guest to throw the first ball into play. Wind Racer would eventually work through his fears of living in his mother's shadow and would have shot the winning goal (at rainboom speed taking the goon into stands with his parents) and he'd have gotten his cutie mark, a Gold Trophy with a olive wreath below it.
