this looks awesome you must be a great seamstress, I think that I am just going to buy a shirt/skirt just add the ruffles and probably have my mom help make the cape (she has experience with capes and just about anything sewing).Β

This is awesome, I'm glad to see a Ruby cosplay that has a more matte fabric for the main piece (most of the ones I've seen are really glossy like satin or something). Do you remember what kid of fabric you used? Is love to know

The black main fabric I used was Black Stretch Sateen.

It was no problem, I just remembered because I just got the same material for the Blake Cosplay i'm making right now. If I remember the red fabric name I'll let you know.Β

I did use satin but only for the frills. I usedΒ vinyl for the corset and belt. I forget what the names of the fabrics I used for the main dress, under skirt and cape are. I picked them out by the feel of them, not by the name so I can't really help you there. But i will describe the black fabric is kind of like the fabric used for a tux or a suit; and the red fabric is more of a cotton feel.

This is awesome, well done

I'm in the process of making her outfit too as I'm cosplaying as her in a few months, I've made the scythe and cape, and that's it O:

What will you do for shoes?

I have a standby pair of boots that I have for kind of a stand in until I'm able to find a close enough pair of boots for her, after that i'm just going to paint the sole of it and add the frills to the top of them.Β

That looks so incredible!! Much better than my Weiss xD I have to use templates so my dress isn't accurate and I made the unforgivable mistake of using satin..

Yeah satin isn't too terribly good to use for the main piece, it's good for accent pieces like the frills and inner linings.Β

Yeah. I'm a total genius ._.

I've learned my lesson... after all, this is my first cosplay that I've hand-sewn. All my others I purchased. Hopefully next time it'll look better Dx

I'm sure you will, the best was to learn to be better at something is trial and error.Β

It looks so well made!
I'm also making a Ruby Rose cosplay, so I have to ask, how did you make the corset?
I've been putting it off so much, since I'm absolutely clueless on how to make one.

I used black Vinyl and silver grommets.

Is the black vinyl expensive?
I want to know, since I've got a limited budget.

For me it was about 3 bucks for 4/5ths of a yard, because it was the end of the roll and I had coupons. If you're looking to get it on cheap try looking for a Joann fabric store and wait for them to have a sale or coupons, they normally have them every two weeks and it can save you a lot of money. I know on a normal basis their Vinyl is about 6.99 per yard, but I only really needed was about half a yard.Β

This is kind of awkward, but I've never heard of that shop...
I don't live in America, so I'm not really sure if what you said would be relevant to where I am.

Just try looking for a fabric store near you, if there are multiple ones you can go in and see if they have the fabric you need and check the price. Most fabric stores have sales and coupons regularly so you might want to check their website or ask an employee when the next sale is. I wish i could direct you to a specific store but i'm not very familiar with fabric stores outside of the U.S.

I know of a couple of places that sell fabrics, but I am completely unaware of any sales or coupons. One of them is in an indoors market, so I think that it's pretty unlikely that they'd have sales or coupons.

But, as for making the corset itself, do you have any recommendations as for fabric patterns to use for it?
I would like some advice, as it's my first time making a corset.

It was honestly just a rectangle the edges did have a little bit of an angle to go along the curve of my waist but other then that it was just a straight rectangle cut. It's not really a traditional way of making a corset but it's a lot easier and follows the design of the character better.Β

Miku-Nyan02 In reply to seaminglyComplex [2013-08-04 17:13:18 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it would. I might end up having to make the corset out of cotton like the rest of my costume.
Thanks for the advice.

this is really nice! i've a suggestion though for the ribbons/strings on her waist----it's be nice if it were a bit thicker than it is right now (if you can still adjust/remove it or if you have some time). ^^v

based from Monty's turnaround of Ruby, the strings overlap like this:Β Ruby Rose strings preview

anyhow, good luck on your cosplay! :3

Thanks, and I am going to be using different string for the corset, but that was all I have at the moment. Thank you for the up close look at the pattern to the strings all I had were screen shots from the show and trailer and it wasn't a really clear look.Β
