Description

This is a sketch I did of Prince Etarlam's underground chamber.
This is where he is currently living, it's in the sewers of Seattle (and next to a train tunnel). He sometimes comes to this area to either meditate or train.
The walls of his chamber are decorated with frescoes and a large carving. It shows a stylized family tree, hunting scenes, and elaborate renderings of trolls, fairies, goblins, and ogres. Pipes and ducts disfigure the ancient walls.

Etarlam left home thousands of years ago. He travelled the globe and learned much, learning from the other magical races.
He enjoyed his time among trolls, goblins, ogres, and other breeds of fairy (yet feels humans are vile creatures). He also has a fascination with dwarf-mechanics. Etarlam is sort of a magical "techno-geek" who loves making and fixing things himself (as you can see in this sketch, there is an array of tools in his possession including an anvil).

He also has a makeshift bed in this chamber. It's no less than a collection of old pillows and a blanket on a handful of cardboard. There's no luxury underground...

Etarlam is pretty angry that gorgeous mythological creatures have been crammed into an increasingly smaller space thanks to mankind’s rapaciousness.
Imagination in all of its forms is sanitized and destroyed. The elven king took pity on man, and mankind has greeted that mercy by relegating magical creatures to live underneath the sewer systems and cellars. The goblins love the human world though, our machines and poisons have made a haven for their kind.
Etarlam chooses to live underground (approximately six miles) most of the time because his people have no choice but to do so. He has no qualms about going above ground in broad daylight or lurking around at night, but because his people live almost exclusively underground, he feels a sense of duty to share their fate with them as much as possible.
This makes him horribly unhappy, because he loves the sun, so he has had to make the best of living underground in any way that he can. Other races that are less humanoid than he is really do not have the option of venturing above ground without being captured, injured, or turned to stone. It is simply too dangerous for them because they catch the eyes of humans far too easily. So Etarlam does find solace with others who share his situation, such as Tohru. They keep him company. Beyond that, Etarlam has had to change the way he thinks about being underground in order to keep himself sane, for lack of a better way of putting it. He has stopped thinking about it as being entombed against his will or being separated from the sun. Now he thinks of it as being closer to the heart of the earth, embedded deep within its energy.
Indeed, he feels a sense of peace now thinking about it that way, especially when he travels very far down underground.
Tohru has kindly broken down some of the walls here and there, human ones built for subways and other underground infrastructure. Breaking down the concrete or the stone blocks, Tohru has hollowed out alcoves in several locations where human invasion has been cleared away and only the soil remains. Soil and rock and plant roots. When truly troubled, Etarlam retreats to one of these spaces. There, in the darkness, feeling the moisture and smelling the earthy odor of the soil and the organic aroma of plant material, he finds instant comfort. If he cannot be outside in the wind and under the sun in forests that largely no longer exist, then at least he can retreat into the earth’s embrace.
