Description

Puffball Fairies are a race of fairy that resembles a cartoonish disembodied head with a slender tail, pointy ears, a pair of eyes, and a mouth. Formed in a shape of bubble, they come in different body colors and move by floating on the air. Humming is an activity they enjoy; unfortunately, their humming is considered annoying to every other fairy. When they get scared, they explode, however they can reappear in a few minutes.

When drawing the Puffballs, I was inspired by Yōkai of Japanese folklore called "Tsurube-otoshi" ( 釣瓶落とし). These Yōkai resemble gigantic, disembodied heads and they live in trees. They're known to attack unsuspecting travelers by dropping from a tree. They do this to either eat their prey or crush them for fun. You know, because they have a great sense of humor. Sometimes they like to light themselves on fire and look like a huge fireball. Then drop on you.
Another influence was the Buddhist talismans called "Daruma dolls". Daruma are traditionally wooden dolls the size of a fist, painted red in the image of a man with no arms or legs. This man was Bodhidharma, the Buddhist monk who began the Zen Buddhist tradition of Japan. He was said to have meditated for nine years until his arms and legs dropped off through atrophy. Daruma dolls are wishing items; when one is purchased, a wish should be made and then an eye of the doll is colored in with a black pen. When that wish comes true, the other eye is filled in.
