Description EDIT: I've been getting a lot more s since this has been added to , so thanks in advance for them and anyone I didn't get around to thanking.

I couldn't find any good tutorials for making emoticons using GIMP, so I made one within GIMP (hence the title) inspired by a tutorial geared towards paint.NET.

Very interesting is a lot better than very boring Even though others have said otherwise, I still feel it might be a bit on the wordy side. (which is why I tried to make sure I had as many relevant images as possible.)

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and the wise few words.

But the point is that you can express your feeling with only one image that reflects the sentiment expressed.

Np! I make and post tutorials a lot while browsing through them, trying to learn new tricks. A lot of the members are newbies and really want/need the help.

I'm probably still a newbie with GIMP, even though I've been using it for a while, since I haven't really explored much into scripts and all that.

Neither have I, really. Never had a reason to really get into it until now. Still, it's a good tutorial.

I honestly don't think I'll be expanding my gimp very much, but I did find a brush set I liked. Who knows, maybe I'll find enough good tutorials on the whole script-fu and what not that'll help me learn more. (Personally, I found the GIMP handbook to be pretty useless)

I'm actually gathering material for a GIMPshop book I plan on writing. There are a lot of things that there are no tutorials for. I recently made on on how to select and delete a specific color in a texture. The person that requested it had been looking for one about it for a while, and I looked as well. Nothing. GIMP is a great program, better once you know how to use it. If you know what to get and install, it can be BETTER then photoshop, imo. I'd love to be able to help people understand it a little better.

I laughed at the "Dont name it Monkey if you have a cat. (Unless your cat is named monkey then go for it)"

Anyway, amazing tutorial! I am familiar with Gimp, but this helped a lot, and you gave out a lot of great tips and information I didnt already know You should make more tutorials, because this was really helpful. I just have a question for something in GIMP that you might be able to answer. When I make GIF animations in gimp, I want the animation to have a transparent background, but when I do that, you will be able to see the previous frames beneath in the animation. Any suggestions?

So glad you approve of it! Through out the whole time making it, I was thinking it was too wordy, but didn't want to leave it not wordy enough so I tried using as many pictures as possible. I also tried giving the feel that you are watching me work, for the newer users. If I were to try making another tutorial, I'd have no idea what I would do it on.

As far as your question goes, I DO have a suggestion! But first a little back story I was having the same problem when trying to animate "Pierre the Pear". I couldn't find any help in GIMP's official faq or around the web, so i did the next best thing I could think of: search dA. What I ended up doing, after finding an emote with the transparent background, I downloaded it and opened it up. Did some observations on it, and figured it out. To actually answer your question: There are some 'frame commands' that I've never found much info on, but the one you're looking for is (Replace). The only other one I know of is "Combine", but I've yet to figure the use of that one out. I'm sure you know that when you save as a .gif animation, GIMP adds "(100ms)" to the end of each layer name unless you specify a different rate. What I've come to learn is that you need to add "(Replace)" right after the frame time. example: "Monkey-Cat (100ms)(Replace)" I don't know if you have to capitalize replace or not or if you can have a space between the parentheses, but I imagine it's not horribly strict about it.

I had found out about the (Combine) command when I opened ^krissi001 's "Bring me to life" in GIMP. I've got a few ideas bouncing around on how to use it, but haven't had the time to try.

Yea, it had many words, I gotta admit I had to re-read some of the things, to make sure I got it all, but english isnt my first language either ^^ But Gimp is an advanced program, so its nessecary to write alot

Ah, that was smart! Thanks a lot, Im gonna try that out when animating with GIMP in the future! But I find it weird that its not wrote clearer how to do it, since I would imagine that nearly everybody animating would prefer it replacing

Gimp doesn't seem to have the exact details on animating drawn out clearly in their tutorials or anywhere else, so who knows. Finding a good third-party resource for gimp is about just as hard.
