Wow, I just had a look through your gallery, and you are really good. I can't comment on your technical skills at all! However, while the figure background relationship of white top of the head and the grey background is fantastic, the way the background sketchiness and the side of the head and the arm don't meet up really bothers me. Not only do you miss out on the contrast to make the side of the head stand out, but the interestingly shaped edge of the grey area distracts from the figure. Sorry to nitpick and post about it ... it's a fantastic picture, and I'm greatly admire your skill! Also, dwarves ftw.

Sorry about that! The top of the head really stands out from the background because it is light and the background is dark. The dark background doesn't continue down though. This means it doesn't actually touch the side of the face and the mustache. If it did, I think it would help the whole head to stand out from the background more.
The bottom edge of the grey background thing is quite interesting. It's not a smooth edge, it looks cross hatched and sketchy. This would normally be a good thing, but in this case I think that it distracts from the dwarf.
