I was asked to draw a commission of Polychrome, a “rainbow” fairy from the Land of Oz books. She’s a fun character, but not very useful. She’s part of this gallery of characters I suspect the writer invented because he just found them pretty or cool. She’s basically this fairy that falls from the sky and, since it’s colder on earth, kinda dances to keep warm. She’s really, really fun to draw. Yay. Rainbows!Related content

This reminds me of a Japanese folk tale about a lady who dances every day before the shrine of her dead lover from whom she was tragically separated in their youth. I can't remember the whole story, but it is in Tales from Japanese Storytellers by Post Wheeler, which is one of my favorite books. If you're interested, I can paraphrase the story in a week or so after spring break when I can get my hands on my copy of the book again.

I plan on including her in my second book as a BFF to a very special girl who was adopted by two of the main characters. The little girl's name will be Anusha (hindi for a beautiful morning star) and she will also have Asperger's as I am planning on including children on the autistic spectrum in the later books. It's is strongly hinted that in my first book, one of the main characters "is very much a creature of habit and routine" and loves technology would be somewhere on the spectrum as well.

A twist of ocean currents and who should be there?
But the one who flies o're the skies
As water or light of sun
As many or as one
As we look up to her gorgeous array
Little do wonder what she gave
To be this spector of hope and wonder
Light do dance
And stars do run
But the Rainbow stays same
As she always has
Existing if only to give joy to those who happen to glance
Up at the sky.

Polychrome was also one of the most powerful characters in Oz but wielded her power subtly; it was rare that you really recognized what she was capable of. Not that she was invincible, as Mrs. Yoop demonstrated.

We have Dorothy, who reshaped the entire structure of Oz society; Ozma, inherently the power of Oz; Glinda, possibly more powerful than anyone else one-on-one; Mrs. Yoop, powerful Yookoohoo; Polychrome, Daughter of the Rainbow; Trot, survivor of more than just Oz-based adventures; Betsy, who among other things confronted the Nome King in his own throne room (alas, that happened to poor Ruggedo a lot); Queen Coo-Ee-Oh, powerful sorceress who mastered the powers of the Three Adepts; Reera the Red, another powerful Yookoohoo; Jinjur, raising an army and conquering Oz simply out of annoyance with housework. Yeah, there's a lot of dangerous women in Oz.

Oh, I don't know -- she had her moments of usefullness in the books, from time to time. But mostly she seemed to just have a habit of getting stranded!
