This is the planet Nlia. It is an M-Class planet in the Norayis Sector of the Alpha Quadrant and is home to roughly 500 million Nlians, who are native to the planet. It is the second of four planets and has a single moon, Tilva, which is home to 1000 Nlians working in research bases and mining posts. It is located five light years from Starbase 19 and nine light years away from Tkara.
Nlia has three main landmasses:
The Northern Land: A tiny northern island continent, which is roughly the size of Turkey.
The Western Land: A large western continent which is the size of Eurasia
The Eastern Land: A large eastern continent, which is about the size of Asia.
The two southern continents are collectively referred to as the Southern Lands and mostly comprise of vast deserts with arid grasslands and savannas near the northern coasts. The Nlians living on these continents thrived on trade and wealthy city-states developed along great caravan routes bringing goods to coastal port cities from inland sources and vice versa. The Western Land in particular was home to the Great Trade Route which supported cities in the otherwise inhospitable Great Dune Sea found in the center of the continent. Marine trade between the Western and Eastern Lands was so great that the narrow sea between the two continents became known as the Trade Sea. The city of Oslamth was the largest trading port on Nlia before it became the planetary capital.
Along the northern coast of the Western Land is the Valo Hills region, which thousands of years ago was home to a variety of small Nlian communities that relied upon fishing for their survival. Cataclysmic volcanic eruptions forced them to flee from the region, and most of them settled on the small, green northern continent. Although the Valo Hills would be plagued by periodic smaller eruptions that made it inhospitable for another thousand years, eventually the activity died down and new populations began to settle in the region. The volcanic activity would make the soil in the region incredibly fertile and it would become the breadbasket of the planet, eventually being known as the Greenland by the Nlians that came to resettle the region.
The Northern Land in stark contrast to the south, is covered with dense forests with rainforests in the southernmost regions. As mentioned it was settled by refugees from the Valo Hills as they followed the migratory patterns of White Gliders in the hopes of finding a new home. After arriving in the Northern Land, the refugees quickly began to move inland and abandon much of their original sea-faring lifestyle in favor of hunting, gathering and garden farming in their new, bountiful home. Some scattered fishing communities remained but the Northern Lands soon lost contact with the Southern Lands for over two thousand years, during which time the Northerners became very adept at forestry and woodworking.
While the harshness of their world could have driven the Nlians to fiercely compete over limited resources, it instead fostered a culture of cooperation, sharing, and respect for the land. One of their most common sayings is "Be mindful of those that will live here after you," and the Nlians have taken this to heart with a deep love and respect of the natural world. Every city, even those in the Great Dune Sea, devotes significant resources to vast and lush gardens: a custom which is aided by the Nlian mastery of desert agriculture,
efficiently utilizing oasis and even the meekest of subterranean water sources.
The Northern and Southern Lands would eventually reestablish contact and trade around the Earth year 800 BC, and by 1420 AD, the planet was peacefully unified under the terms of the Concord of Unity.
Around four centuries later, in 1821 AD the Nlians began leaving their planet and exploring their system. Over the next two centuries they established a colony on their moon, and later mining installations on the ore-rich planet of Icar and then the moons of Droshen, a gas giant in their system.
Eventually they established a research outpost on Gemon, a moon of the gas giant, Zeuna, which lay at the edge of their system. It was on Gemon that the Nlians first became a warp capable species in 2014 AD, testing a vessel capable of Warp 2. The very next year they established First Contact with the Tkarites, natives of a neighboring star system, and in 2054 they established regular trade relations with said Tkarites.
Nlia would continue to be a relatively isolated world until they first begin interacting with the United Federation of Planets in 2165, only four years after its founding, and in 2210 the Nlians would officially join the Federation. Nlia is also home to Crewmen Tuskaro Alyen and Shylea L’Naym, crewmembers of the USS Saratoga in my AU Abramsverse series ‘A New Start’ and close friends of Captain James T Kirk.
