At this point the Nlian Fleet is about 86 years old.
Starfleet has kept old models for a long time, look at the Excelcior in the Prime verse.
It was first launched in 2283 and the class was still being used during the Next Generation era.
Also small ships are used too. Look at the size of the Defiant; it’s no bigger than a Nlian ship.

Over the decades the outside of the Nlian ships looks the same, but internally they constantly update
and improve. Including the weapons.

That they do!
Ties are very close between the Defense Fleet and the Norayis Watch.
They frequently have crew exchanges as well (a crewmember from one ship serving on another for a few days)
so that they have good feels for each other .
