Her homeworld was an arid colony planet. When she was only eleven her homestead was attacked by raiders.
The man who had been assigned to monitor that area for danger had been drinking and so when the attack
came the settlers had no warning. Her family was killed and she was captured. Before she escaped, she endured
over two years of repeated beatings and rapes, losing one of her eyes and having her face scarred in the process. 
No one understands the pain of being violated better than her.

Ever since then she's been completely dedicated to protecting those under her watch. Heaven help you if she
catches you slacking or doing something that might endanger a crewmember! She’s sworn that anyone on
the Saratoga, regardless of their department, who through neglect or foolishness, gambles with the life of another
crewmember, will be treated by her as harshly as if they lost the wager.

And if you're an enemy out to hurt the crew!

That she is and she's VERY intimidating.
She's stern, reserved, as humorless as a Vulcan, doesn’t suffer fools, and can be flat out terrifying if she’s angry.
Even Bones doesn’t talk back to her when she’s displeased and she could make Spock quake in his boots.

She’s very hard on those who make mistakes, especially if they endanger someone, and she’s particularly
fond of publicly and harshly dressing down offenders so those actions won’t be repeated.

But although she’s harsh she’s never unfair. And while she’s not easy to like, there’s not a doubt in anyone’s
mind that there’s no one more committed to the safety of the crew and no better person to have at your back
if there’s trouble.

There's a reason for her harshness. She was born on a small homestead at the edge of Federation space.

And no one is more determined to keep harm from befalling others under her watch.

It explains her harshness with mistakes. Due to the possibility of raids the settlers in her region had established
a parameter guard to warn them of danger. But that fateful night the man on duty for her area had been drinking.

It also explains why she’s sworn that anyone on the Saratoga, regardless of their department, who through
neglect or foolishness gambles with the life of another crewmember, will be treated by her as harshly as if
they lost the wager.

Here's another strong female figure on the Saratoga: Chief Engineer Joyce Filars.
She's the Queen Bee of the Saratoga and Mother-Hen/Mother Bear to Captain Kirk!

I've been reading through your crew bios, and you've assembled an interesting cast and raised interesting questions, particularly in your opening stories. I see much of what happened in the reboot--Vulcan's demise, etc.-- happened, but much of the rest didn't go well. I'll have to read more.
