If Syleen visits Garak's Tailor Shop, then she'd run into Marino quite often.  Though there's a good chance that she might get a little jealous, even if Marino won't admit it.

I used to thank Syleen and Vanall would frequent Garak's shop but now I'm not sure anymore.
Remember, neither Tkarites or Nlians conduct business with those who practice slavery
or trafficking, and look at how the Cardassians treated the Bajorans during the Occupation.

Of course the Occupation's over now but they wouldn't do business unless they knew more
about the person in question

In that case, I don't think they'd do business with Quark either, considering how he treats his employees and that he demands sex from his Dabo girls through a contract.

You're right. I forgot about that.

So, who would they do business with on DS9?

SeekHim In reply to suburbantimewaster [2018-09-05 06:32:27 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure honestly!
DSN is a big place and the promenade has a lot other businesses.
And trader and business people come from all over.
They still might end up in Quark's to discuss business with whomever they're working with.

I just had another thought, does Quark demand sex from his Dabo girls throughout the whole series?
I know Rom started a union and conditions improved afterwards

Quark did try to get sex from a Dabo Girl in Profit and Lace, which was after the union was formed.  As for Garak, there's really no proof that he's practiced slavery or trafficking other than him being a Cardassian which, forgive me for saying, is a bit of racial profiling.  So, there's no reason why Syleen wouldn't buy from him.  Plus, as of where my fanfic is, Quark is still practicing slavery and, unlike Garak, he has more evidence against him than just his species.

other than him being a Cardassian  which, forgive me for saying, is a bit of racial profiling. >

Sorry. Wasn't trying to do that.

That's all right.  I'm just letting you know that there's no reason that Syleen wouldn't buy from Garak, or sell to him.  However, none of them would ever associate with Dukat.

Put this lady and her friends in an adventure with Quark!  Maybe he needs them to finalize a big deal; unfortunately, Odo's heard about a possible sale of stolen gems or a stone sacred to Bajor. Thanks to these ladies' wits, Quark avoids jail and they collect a reward. Something like that.

I just had a thought.
They might not do business with Quark at all.
Neither Tkarites or Nlians will conduct business with anyone involved in slavery or trafficking.
Look at how Quark treats his employees. And he also demands sex from his Dabo girls through a contract.

Or Quark desperately needs their help for a big deal, and they decide to use that leverage to revise his employees' contracts.

Sound perfect!
I have to admit my story ideas are drying but I've been thinking about having pictures
made of these two and their Tkarite friend.

That would be nice. Maybe having drinks at Quark's bar on DS9. I can picture the Nilans ladies straight-faced telling Constable Odo how Quark helped them recover Bajor's stolen Stone of Souls.

"Oh, I'm certain he did," Odo says, completely unconvinced.

An interesting thing about Nlians. They have deep respect for law enforcers.
Member of the Security Force on their world were deeply honored and every citizen was aware
of their responsibility: the protection of their people. Even the worse Nlian rogues always give law
enforcement officers  a great degree of respect.

Which brings us again to Syleen and Dyma. Although they're not above tricky legal maneuvers
they never break laws directly. They have no intention on taking the stolen gems/jewels Quark tries
to sell them, but they have every intention of turning the situation to their advantage!

Quark often does business with the two of them and they keep him on his toes! He's a bit nervous around
Yanell however. He has no desire to get one of his ears cut off!

I might have a picture done of that someday: A Ferengi learning that one should not try to cheat a Tkarite!
Or maybe Yanell smiling, charming and polite even while she's calmly polishing a knife and Quark
looking very nervous!

When you deal with Tkarites by all means try to gain the advantage while bargaining, but once the terms
are ironed out you ALWAYS follow through and you DO NOT break your word. If you do they'll make you pay for it.

Long ago Tkarites sealed agreements with blood. If two Tkarites were making an agreement they would
each, in the presence of witnesses, take a knife.  One would and make a small cut on the other's arm and say:
"If I break this agreement than a knife shall cut deeper."

They would then make a similar cut on the other's arm and say:
"If you break this agreement, than a knife shall cut deeper."

The other Tkarite would then do and say the same thing.

The witnesses would then say: "If one breaks the agreement then a  knife shall cut deeper."

I take it you can figure out the implications!

As time passed this rite declined because it became deeply ingrained to never break one's word.
But every Tkarite knows that if they break an agreement the consequences will not be pretty.
And those who deal with Tkarites know that if you break an agreement with them the consequences will
not be pretty. And heaven help you if they find out you're involved in anything to do with human trafficking!

I think the fact Nilans are a rule don't break the rules and adhere to law would flummox Quark a good bit, especially if he doesn't know much about their culture. They could hint that they've, oh, bent the rules in the past, and he would likely interpret this as lawbreaking. But I bet he'd be very careful around Tkarites; he'd probably know about that incident with the Orions, so he guess that the word "bluff" isn't in their vocabulary.

The reason why Nlians as a rule are law abiding dates back to their ancient past when they lived
in tiny nomadic groups. In a harsh environment they knew that the only way they'd survive was
if everyone in the  group depended on each other. They all had to work together and share or else
they wouldn't survive. If another tried to hoard or take advantage of the others, the group wouldn't
survive. One couldn't just think about themselves because what they did affected everyone else.

As groups grew larger and became villages and then cities, that principle continued: rules and laws
were designed to protect the people and if you broke them the group suffered. The purpose
of law enforcement officers was to serve as guardians and protectors and they were respected
and honored.

Its interesting that for all their differences Nlians and Tkarites both have in common the fact that
they respect rules and honor authority figures.

Respect rules of law. Honor authority figures. Those words too often don't apply to humans. Break the law just to break it and defy authority just to defy it. Yes, there are times when we must break the law (civil disobedience) and defy authority (what had  to be done in US during the Civil Rights movement, but too often for no good reason.

There is one more thing I forgot to mention earlier that's vital to Nlians.
They are taught from birth to regard all other Nlians as family. A male Nlian that you'd meet on
the street is as much your brother as your flesh and blood, and a female is as much your sister.
If you steal from, take advantage of, or harm someone you  are harming a brother or sister.
If you rape one, you are raping a brother or sister. And if you kill one you are killing a brother or sister

There are three types of siblings on Nlia.
Creator Sibling: A fellow child of Nlia
Flesh and blood sibling: One born of the same parents as you.
Soul Sibling: One whom you have shared your soul with.

On Nlia the rule is treat everyone else as you would your brother or sister, because they are.

I'm guessing that small, extended families and a relatively small population helped this sort of culture evolve.

SeekHim In reply to scorpionlover42 [2017-09-02 16:46:39 +0000 UTC]

Families also played a big part in it. Remember Nlians could only have children when the Mating
struck and that was always infrequent. No Nlian has ever had more than three children and they're
often born years apart. When one only has a few children you tend to appreciate them more.

Also when Nlians lived in small bands sometimes there was only two or three children in the band
and everyone took care of them knowing that they were a precious resource. Lifemates who had no
children would help take care of other children and would come to love them as much as their own.
When they finally did have children the rest of the group would help care for them and come to love them
as their own.

On Nlia your neighbor's child is also your child. And since every Nlian is your brother or sister,
theirchild is your nephew or niece.

LOL!
On a totally different subject it would also be interesting to see those two on Risa.
They often visited there dring the years they worked in that sector. It would raise a lot
of interesting issues considering Nlian  sexuality and the tragic events in their species past.

As cunning and mischievous as both women are, they're both still virgins and intend to remain
that way unless and until they find lifemates. They definitely enjoyed the beaches and the swimming.
They also enjoy clubbing and dancing but anything more than that is out of the question.

They were also interested in Betezed and curious about the similarities and differences between
Nlian telepathy and Betazoid.
