The USS Assistance speeds towards her next mission.

She is a member of the Utilzer class, a support/utility vessel that handles the many tasks too numerous for front line vessels. Utilizers set up, maintain and repair equipment, deploy and retrieve probes, perform routine surveys, deliver cargo and supplies, transport passengers, provide engineering supprt, perform humanitation tasks and the countless other jobs neccessary to keep the Federation running.

They're routinely assigned to large-scale engineering projects and are commonly used as follow ups after First Contacts, helping the new civilization further develop their infrastructure. As a result, they have many specialists and carry a lot of equipment, so they're a very popular assignment for both engineers and scientists.

Utilizers aren't intended for combat. They're able to defend themselves but this is seldom neccessary as they almost never venture beyond Federation space. Because they're constantly picking up and delivering supplies and equipment they never spend more than a week or so away from 'port' so to speak. They're considered safer postings and are one of the few types of Starfleet vessels that
have families aboard. Like all support vessels Utilizers blend into the background and are unsung, but the work they do is vital for Starfleet and those who serve on them know their worth, even if others don't find them exciting.

Utilizer's are frequent junior postings for both crew and captains. Some view them as stepping stones to more interesting assignments. Others however prefer being in Federation space on safer assignments. Particularly if they're raising a family.
