Description
Final Fantasy VIII - Sorceress Edea, Studio Shoot with Elias Lopez and Neil Creek .Nearly a full view of the back-fan here... We did kind of struggle to fit it onto the backdrop XD
A long while ago, and I were talking about full-face makeup masks. She did an absolutely amazing tiger mask, but I wanted to do something different... Despite the haters, FF8 will always hold a special place in my heart, being not only my first FF, but the series that started me cosplaying as well.
So, I chose to try to do Sorceress Edea, of course. I mean, it's just makeup, right? Well, it wouldn't really be Edea if I didn't do the helmet. Plus, Edea just wears this simple, slinky black dress, right? And... oh, I need more practice with foamcore anyway, so I might as well make the back-fan too.
Then about a month ago, I received an exclusive invitation from two of my favourite cosplay photographers to do a full-day studio shoot with them!
Wait, don't I only have four weeks until the shoot?
Construction Notes:
- I modified an existing dress pattern and drafted the gloves, and did all the sewing and prop-making (helmet and back-fan) myself.
- Makeup involved drawing the veins on with white kohl pencil, enhancing with white gel eyeliner, gold eyeshadow and rust-brown eyeshadow to add dimension. Eyes were done in 3 shades of purple, including a shimmering lilac duochrome mineral eyeshadow. Lipstick was a purple-based lipstick, with the same mineral eyeshadow pigment as used on the eyes. False lashes and yellow circle lenses finish the look.
- The base of the helmet is a child's pirate hat, the horns are furniture foam offcuts, beads and spirals are air-dry clay, and the rest of the details are foamcore or craft foam, all painted with acrylic paint.
- I originally made the horns with air-dry clay, which brought the weight of the helmet to roughly 1 kilogram. Needless to say, the horns broke two nights before the shoot, meaning I had to re-make from foam and paint them in one day.
- The main part of the back-fan (not shown in this picture) is made of a single piece of 1000x800x5mm piece of foamcore, with the spikes adding an extra 500mm each, for a total span of about 2m. The fan was assembled at the studio, as it would not fit inside my car otherwise.
- Estimated cost of the costume: ~$200AUD, most expensive item being the foamcore and various prop materials. I did not include the cost of makeup purchased, as I would have bought it anyway.
- Estimate time to make the costume: 4 weeks, under immense pressure.
- Firsts for this costume:
- First time working with furniture foam
- First helmet
- First time working with stretch fabric
- First successful attempt at gloves
- First cosplay featuring full-face, highly detailed makeup
- Biggest prop ever made
- First professional studio shoot
- First time working with furniture foam
