Description
FINALLY!This took me three weeks! x_x Fullview or download to see all the details.
Anyway. This is scenes from one of my fanfics. It runs parallel to Wind Waker...you know, the game in which the evil King Daphnes imprisons Zelda in Hyrule Castle's basement, then plots to use Link to destroy Hyrule.
What do you mean, that's not how the story goes?
"Cry For Hyrule" takes place both during WW and OOT, and tries to explain some of the more unexplainable things in WW, more or less.
made a fanart for it! [link]
And here are some other attempts I made at illustrating the story.

"Cry for Hyrule" was EPIC. I read it a week or two before beating The Wind Waker, but at the end of the game, I was really struck by how much humanity Ganondorf Dragmire really had. And I don't really blame him for wanting Hyrule; in Ocarina of Time, it really was a beautiful environment.
And, as is also mentioned in the game, what good is an ocean without any fish? (well, except those fish-men who draw you maps of every sector of the Sea, but I don't think they count)
What really awed me the most was Ganondorf's monologue about the wind right before the final battle.
And I think I may have been suspicious about the King beforehand, but you really unvealed him as a true Chessmaster.
I have no way of knowing how many times I whacked him in the face as punishment after reading your fic...

Thanks. I really wish they would expand on Ganondorf's character. It would add a lot of depth to the game.
I whacked the King in the head numerous times once I played WW the second time.
Thanks for the fav too, BTW.

Why thank you. I enjoyed writing it. The end of Wind Waker really bothered me.

It bothered me too. I felt so bad for killing Ganondorf... or turning him into stone. He would have most definitely gotten Hyrule back if Daphnes hadn't went, "Poof! I'm going to pop in after I've done nothing to help you, Link, and make a wish I don't deserve!"
....
I HATE Daphnes.

That ending had me in a stupor for an entire day afterward. Few endings meet that level of "What the HELL was THAT?"
Seriously, why didn't Daphnes just wish to get rid of Ganondorf and restore Hyrule? Why would he want to destroy his own country? And why bother wishing for "these children to have a future" if they have to fight off a very angry King of Evil first?

There could have been so many different endings where Ganondorf killed Link and won, all throughout the game! Link was very unprepared. And even if I don't like the actual ending, I do like how they added so much to Ganondorf's motives. Made me like the character even more
Of course, if Daphnes is a so called "good guy," he might feel ashamed of wanting Hyrule back just like Ganondorf did. So he made the decision to keep the Hyrule submerged and let history simply start over, since his country held too many memories.
As for Ganondorf... maybe Daphnes just wanted to see Link fight him, because if his wish were to be granted, Link could not lose.
I still hate Daphnes.
Nintendo Logic... they had to make it very epic somehow XD

One of the things I liked about Wind Waker is that it showed Ganondorf as having a very human side rather than being pure evil. He mentioned he came from an extremely poor country where his people constantly suffered while the hylians always feasted on the pleasures of the world. It did make you stop and think for a minute that Ganondorf's motives were not completely evil and that the hylians never stopped and thought about how other people didn't have it so good. This version of Ganondorf inspired to make a descendant for him who was not evil.

Yes, that really raised the caliber of the game a lot. Anybody can make a game with a villain that's evil just because, but Ganondorf actually had a reason for what he did.
And Ganondorf didn't destroy Hyrule...Daphnes did.
There will always be evil things in the world...Daphnes destroyed his own country so that Link and Zelda could find another one. But the ones they find have evil things, too. So it's a total waste.

If anything, Ganondorf wanted to keep it going and understood Hyrule's value better than it's own king did. However, it's like the old proverb goes it's easier for a poor man to understand suffering rather than a rich man and I think the contrast between Daphnes and Ganondorf was the embodiment of that proverb. Daphnes was the king of richest country in the world and therefor must have had it very easy and was very spoiled. Ganondorf did not. Ganondorf probably didn't even have servants or lived in a castle even. Just look at the way he dressed and how in Ocarina of Time, he bowed to another king.

Yeah, and one thing that sets Zelda apart from Daphnes (in OOT anyway), is that she lived seven years as an exile and in hiding. She had to learn a lot to survive. Daphnes must have come a long time after OOT Zelda, I'm sure she would have treated the Gerudo fairly even though their former leader had caused so much trouble.

In my fanfic, Daphnes really does have the mind of a spoiled little boy . However, when he is forced to leave the castle out of circumstance and sees what his country is really like especially when he realizes all the poverty and both racial and gender discrimination, it makes him realize that he was jaded. He even cried when he say a human boy get bullied because he was poor when the kid wanted to buy a mask from the Happy Mask salesman but had so little money he couldn't even afford the cheapest mask there. Every single hylian kid found it hilarious and started making fun of him humiliating the boy even further.

So does Daphnes end up forgetting this experience? He doesn't seem to have learned from it.

While you can't change a person, he does learn from it. A lot actually. He even has the sense to be ashamed that he was ignorant of the world and of all the poverty that was in his own country that he wasn't aware of. When he saw how that boy got treated and why, it was shocking.

Now I have to go read it again!
Daphnes: *waves A Farewell to Arms in my face* Don't you have your homework to worry about?
Me: Yes, but.... *punches Daphnes across room* Don't touch my reading assignment, you.
Ganondorf: Grumpy, today, are we?

You know, before I read your work, I don't think I payed as much attention to all the detail as I played the Zelda series. Thank you, Seldavia!

Ah! I'm so happy I get to see this! I think CFH is one of your best stories, and this does id justice. And I totally agree with you... Ganondorf wasn't really that evil at all in Wind Waker. He was mostly a bad guy attempting to do a good thing by evil means.
On the other hand, Daphnes was a morally-sketchy jerk doing a good thing for an evil end, with an extremely ambiguous outcome. Eh.
Seriously. The Postman Quill is a much better friend than Daphnes. When you respect the postman more than the sidekick... >_>
