Its just what he tells himself at night so he can sleep easier thinking that it’s better that way. Too bad it doesn’t work that way when you’re still just as human as the rest of us.
This would be right after he’s had his primary augmentations. His optical implants wouldn't of been in existence just yet and this would have been the period of time before they started doing the surgery for transferring his brain into an internal casing. During this period of time, he would still be very prone to any life-threatening brain injury and due to the lack of his head rigging in place, he has no control over disconnecting and reconnecting his limbs nor can he control metal.
This would be an adjustment period used to get his sensory somatic nervous system reacquainted to newly cyberized limbs and begin to learn some form of balance. During this period of time, without eyes, he had to teach himself how to use sound and touch, as much as he could, to navigate himself.
