Creature i did for a compation for creature of the week over at CGHUB.
here was the brief:
Bioform Overview
The planet of Alfmar is a harsh one. The surface is riddled with acidic pools and salt flats. One creature exploits the salt flats and it’s abundance of microscopic life forms to survive. The Kikiot is a smallish omnivore that spends hours sweeping the surface of the salt flat pools small plants and animals to eat. It’s long mouthparts are especially adapted for searching the shallows for food.
Bioform Notes
Type: Terrestrial omnivore
Habitat: Shallow pools and Salt flats
Social: They gather to feed but can be aggressive toward each other.
Temperment: Aggressive if provoked
Activity Cycle: Active
Metabolism: Constant
Resperation: Four holes along the chest allow for breathing.
Reproductive: Oviviparous – lays 16-20 eggs.
Physiological Notes:
Size: Small/Medium – 9 kg
Morphology: Symmetrical - bilateral
Skeletal: Endoskeleton
Epidermal: Orange with darker orange legs. Distinctive patterning all over the body.
Limbs: Two long, slender jointed limbs for walking + two sails on the back
Location of Senses: Decentralized on the body
Primary sense: Sight – 6 eyes
Secondary sense: Smell/Taste
Other Notes:
The Kikiot also possesses two sail-like structures on its back for dissipating and absorbing heat. These sails can move to be aimed away or toward the sun.

another great org. i'd hate to get thrashed by its 'mouth' there, it would be more gross than painful but equally repelant to me.

Is it ectothermic or endothermic, or a mixture of the two? Does it have lungs? If so, what kind?

That's quite interesting, and very..... I don't even know ^_^
I like the way you vividly colored it, yet it still looks completely natural, at least color wise. And I very much like the individuality of the design, I love it!

really interesting! but, acid-lakes? arent there "normal" lakes on Alfmar? would like to know more about the planets conditions and other native species!

this was the brief set down for the creature of the week compation at CGHUB we didnt get told any more then the brief, but i would speculate that theres extremophiles and plankton like organsims inhabiting the pools.
The Kikiot filter feeds thease creatures and protects its self from the acidic pools and harsh sun light by excreting a slime over its body and mouth part.
It also assimilate's the pigment found in the bacteria and uses it in its own skin for protection against the planets strong sun much like how the flimingo gains its pinkish colour.

how does it produce slime without a water? or can it drink acid for its metabolism?

Water can be metabolized from fat. (this is known from camels and desert animals.) Perhaps it stores the nutrients from the microgoodies it filters as fat, and then metabolizes that fat to form the water it needs and compose its slime.

There is water as acid is made as part of water, (water is acid PH at times aswell as nuteral). I would guess that some pools are less acidic then others and when it does rain the less acidic moisture can be absorbed in to the creatures body whilts feeding.
And maybe the creture has the ability to process the acidic water (nutralising the acidity by holding it in a special stomach that its cells have a adapted lipid bi-layer and a alkaline is pumped into the mixture to reduce its ph.

it does, but it is infact it is the creatures flexiable mouth parts it uses to flick back and forth skimming the surface of the acidic pools to filter feed.
