Beware if you download, it's 1256 x 1781 pixel and 400dpiPlease, Neoyi, and those that you probably ask to help you judge, read all of this please because my ideas (which I'll explain here) are a big part of that picture ^^°
First I have to explain, why I... of whom you haven't seen any CP art ever neither really heard me ever talking about CP... did this... So I have to start with my view on CP...
(Yeah I'm going to do the "HUGE-Artist-comment"-thing again!... sue me)
Explanations
So here I am... sort of DP-fan... sort of CP-fan...
Well... sort of? Yes sort of... Why sort of?
Because, I liek the concept of the series, I like ghosts in general... I like vampire-look alikes and sexy older men... I like nerdy bookworms with glasses and men with long hair, I like intelligent and witty men... That's why I like the Danny Phantom Series... However I don't really like Danny Phantom/Fenton himself because.. okay so he's a ghost but he doesn't cover any other of the aforementioned things I like T_T ... He's just an annoying 14 year old brat with a fucking cool toy (ghostpowers)
Ahem... Chess Piece... Well... The aforementioned likings are here as well... There is Vlad, there is Technus, there is GHOSTWRITER *drool*... ahem... there is Phantom and so on...
DANNYAnd now... there is a Danny as well... He is still a brat, he is still somewhat annoying... and he is spoiled which 0makes the annoyance even worse *pokes the little wanna-be Gary Stue* .. HOWEVER he is also cunning and smart, he isn't half as childish as the Canon Danny, he is an intelligent little, bratty primadonna bastard with two fucking cool toys (bending and royalty)...
I have to admit I still don't like him enough to read CP because of him... What keeps me reading are Vlad and Writer (slightly Phantom)...
VLAD is on one hand more awesome than in the series, with all the demonpowers, the royalty, the cool clothes, the stunts, et cetera, et cetera...
But on the other hand... I just miss his silver hair and his devilishness... He's too nice, good Papa, all the time... Gloves only off when it's about protecting those he loves... I miss his plotting, scheming nature in CP... I like the "evil" canon Vlad ^^°
DILIGENCE... I like 's style of dressing her characters in tight stuff with lots of belts, because it's kinky... SO, she makes him even more sexy than he appears to me already...
I also have to say, that... I didn't know about Ghostwriter until Ashee pointed out there is a new Chess Piece page... and I was all "What the heck are you talking about???"... SO she pointed me at it... I liked the half naked man on the balcony... (and thought it was Danny at this point) and now wondered who that 'Ghostwriter' everybody spoke about in the comments was... so I watched DP... and became a Fan... and then I watched Fright before Christmas... and fell in love... sort of... And THEN ... then I returned to CP and suddenly all made more sense... and suddenly CP and CP-Writer became much more awesome, due to his increased powers, the scarf, the implicated buttsex, the fact that I figured very early that he IS Doug's brother (I was so proud of myself) and the fact that he's just plain awesome......
But he also in CP is... as much as I hate to say that... an Emo... a fucking, wrist cutting, eyeliner-wearing, dark poetry reciting, gloomy world-hating EMO... Only just he takes all the Emo-Energy that would go into wrist-cutting and so on... he takes it and puts it all in his longing for Danny... He's a psychological EMO... the worst kind, they look rather normal but their mind is soaked with self-pity and emo-ness... *Sighs* No really I DO like the deviant, flamboyantly bohemian gay Diligence that he is in CP... but DAMN I'm a slight choleric myself... I LOVED the Canon Writer who had a short temper but wasn't all whiny when he got arrested but even then still taunted Danny... I LOVED that side... River is a sexy Emo who has his bright moments...
PHANTOM ... First thing... I am biased to Canon Phantom because he is made out of Danny and Vlad... I lve the Vlad part of him but despise the Danny Part!...
CP Phantom however is (as far as we know yet) a single person... or somehow related to Danny and Vlad but this Danny is still better than Canon!.... So yeah... he is a nutbag... he is soft and hard... in both his behavior and his brain I think... He is evil and romantic... he is childish ... he is... schizophrenic to it's best... I can SOOO identify with that ^^° Also, he managed to get into Writer's pants, so that's a big plus for him...
Ahem, yes, these characters and their adventures... are what makes me read CP... it'S surely not Danny and I only scan the pages with him to stay up to date... but DAMN I love CP for having Vlad and Phantom and Writer in it with such nice storylines and details...
I always wanted to do some CP-art but was up to today just too lazy/uninspired (because it has been done in various pics so often...)
And then... popped up with a contest... no 'draw me a sexy Vlad' or 'draw a half naked Danny' thing... but something free... a cover... Of course the main characters would have to be included, but still a chance to slip some GW in... so... I took the chance! Hussa!...
And now... I'm going to start the REAL artist comment... (yeah it's not over yet!... )
Logo
Chess Piece... mind you I know now that it has nothing to do with cheese... [link] (yeah now I know >_> )
It has not really anything to do with Chess either except for, well... people being used as pawns... and other people being all strategic... However I fucking like chess so.... there you go with a little Pawn in the logo and the chessboard-background of doom and the whole thing being Chess-themed....
The logo is sort of... well... I liked the edgy pointy style and the DP-Ps are somewhat in it with touches of moi... ^^°
Characters/ Pieces
... Why is Phantom white?
Because in Chess, white always makes the first move... And that's what Phantom does, oh of course he waits and plots... but a first move was to kill all the people in the hotel back then....... it was a first move to attack Danny in the palace.... and so on... So that of course had to make Danny as his opposite, the black queen... also because the royal Dalvian clothes are often black and Phantom was wearing blue-ish stuff already... so I also tried to stay in the CP style...
Why are Danny and Phantom the Queens?... Weeeeell... on one hand... Danny is a fucking queen somehow, all bitchy and stuff... on the other hand... because the roles of the kings fitted better to someone else...
Vlad there, of course as the Black king... and Clockwork as the white king... Why those? Well, Vlad is the king of Dalv,... Phantom wants him... well that's what you usually want,... to get the opposite king, that's the goal of the game... Also... the moves of the king in Chess are limited... to be exact, he can only move one field... And let's face it... Vlad has been an adventurer but since he is king, his moves are limited by both his family and his duties as king (which come together in Abe... ) ... So he IS a king and... well... we all know good old Clockwork up to now is kind of busy being stuck in a giant tube... we haven't seen him doing anything and it doesn't look as if he's going to get any more mobile in the next time... he as well IS a king... and captured by phantom, also his clothes were kinda blue so it went with the theme...
Did I forget someone?...Ha ha, as if I could!... Writer... what about Writer... well, he has partially white-ish and partially black-ish colours as you might have noticed, and that is for a reason...
You see, when in a Chess game... you manage to get a pawn safely from your side all the way over the big dangerous board to your opponents side... you can turn him into another, stronger piece, the pwan however is gone.... Ahem... person... goes to the 'other side' ... becomes ghost... hence stronger? Ahem, rings a bell?... Well, River died... killed himself *coughemocough*and became a ghost with amazing powers... He was once on Vlad and Danny's side (black) but crossed over to the order of Chaos (white)...
But now, what piece is he?... I thought about this for quite some time... he was a pawn... Usually when you manage that move you wish for a queen due to her vast possibilities of movement...
Also, writer is Phantom's/Danny's boytoy... so a queen would be appropriate... So he is now a Queen... Well, you see... when we had a Chess Game... and I managed to get my pawn over... I wished for a queen... if I still had mine and my opponent didn't I took the other queen and wrapped a hanky around her 'neck' like a scarf...
But here both queens are still in game... So what piece is he? I went for a little insider here of my own liking...
If we both still had our queens, we would take a bishop and place a piece of paper in his slit to mark him as a queen... I know as a bohemian, his moves are not easily foretold, not calculable so a Knight would perhaps fit better to his moves... BUT... admittedly... Writer is NO knight in whatsoever form... he is a writer... A bishop however has clear moves, straight (like straightly going for Danny's love)... it can move easily from one side of the board to the other... which Writer can ... also Bishops are persons who write and read so... yeah... there you go...
If I had included Skulker, I'd made him a rook!
Elements/Colours
A big part of 's stuff is about elements... and well... so I had to kind of bring them in, even if it was just on the clothes... Now why this way...
First of all... Red-black and white-blue ... are just good pairings so it was sort of clear who would get what when I decided about the pieces already...
Dalvian royal clothes are partial blue (wiht all the water and Leviathan and stuff) yes I KNOW that... however i like the black royal garbs... the stuff the non-demonic Vlad used to wear.... And CP Vlad doesn't really look good in blue clothes due to his skin (yeah I based my decisions on Vlad, not on Danny, Sue me!)... I also don't like danny in blue clothes, his Hartman suit is black, he looks good in black... end of discussion... Also, I KNOW Danny isn't exactly good with fire... however the KING of my little "Chess-country" here IS... so the king determines the clothes. Also Vlad is a loving, warm, kindhearted person with a deep passion for everything... definitely warm colours!
Which brings us to the other side, Clockwork and Phantom, well Clockwork always wore bluish-tones... be it in DP or CP... And Phantom? We have just recently seen him in blue, he dons blue a lot... and he can control water, can't he? Also, unlike Danny, HE looks good in blue/white! *nods to herself*
And another thing is, that blue/silver/white are sort of "cold" colours... he may have furious rage but he is still cold-blooded.
Shitty Background of Doom
I wanted a chessboard Background for this... I know it has been done a thousan times but I jsut wanted one... because otherwise all those thousands of thougths about the Chess Pieces would have been for nothing...
And to be honest... the fucking background took WAY longer than the actual pictures of the characters... WTF... The colours didn't want to look right... seriously I tried the whoel rainbow back and forth ten times until I had something that looked good... I... don't want to talk about that anymore, I am still in pain about that and my ego is hurt and I'm going to cry if I have to explain more about the process of making the background...
However... yeah, we have a floor... and we have a piece of sky above us... starry sky...
Starry sky is classical and always nice... also we have some kind of mystical platforms... or the ceiling has holes... your point of view... I gave up trying to find an explanation after having made it look halfway okay (was that proper english?)
Ahem... Yeah... I wanted the chars to come out of the picture a bit so yeah there... Vlad's hand... and Writer's scarf, and Phantom's cloak thingy...
Clothes vs.
I thought it would be fun to draw characters in 's style... all the belts and the several layers of clothes and such... And then I started drawing them and figured I had ACTUALLY NO IDEA WHAT THEY ARE WEARING...
I mean all that stuff... it could be a belt, or a shirt, or a jacket or just... something... they are wearing so much and GOD DAMMIT ... if you make a contest and want people to draw your characters in the clothes you designed... MAKE GODDAMN REFERENCE PICTURES!!!! ... please... *pants* seriously... If knows what they are wearing, that's great but we?... we don't know exactly how many layers Danny wears... we never saw him dressing... or undressing... It's ridiculous... and lets say it like it is, , your pictures/pages are not really useful as reference pics either... the chars are behind other chars or things, they make awesome-body-twisting-action moves... and you rarely see their feet... seriously, I have no idea what shoes Phantom is wearing... 'hence the monster cloak' ... I got kind of despaired about that lack of 'help' ... so I almost wanted to give up before I even had started... but then I saw what an awesome picture Meri had done and I thought... dammit, if she can do that, with her lack of time and work to do and even an artist block... I should be able to do it to!... So there... I threw some stuff together, added a belt here and a fold there... so yeah...
IF I win and get to do the pages I'll so totally vote for naked characters!!! *pants*
Material
Background was done with Photostudio, well d'uh. That was clear...
I've done the outlines with my usual liners ( 0.05 and 0.5 ) Then I thought about the colouring, thought about doing all of it on PC (glad I didn't or this would so never have been finished)... But then I thought... well is doing it all with Copics ( or prisma, well they are somewhat the same)... so IF I should win, she should see I can do it her style too... so I went for her style... the good old hand drawn stuff ^^
Except for those little light effects, those were done in photostudio too ^^°
Picture-People
Vlad: I reeeeaaally liked how this one turned out, one of my best Vlad's so far... I didn't draw much Plasmius yet but this one well... I really like his face... and yeah,, he has red highlines... ^^°
Phantom: ahem... yeah I admit I modelled him to look somewhat like Vlad... with open wild, silverish hair... awwww nice...
Danny: ... yeah uhm... I gave him the "Masters-chin" mentioned ^^°... and almost forgot the glasses... tried to give him a smirk... I like his posture... it's definitely saying he's not impressed by Phantom, and he turns his back at us lowlifes... so definitely Danny ^^°
Writer: ... he sits... in clothes... with his scarf doing the well... I know a lot of American Politicians make that one... greeting the Loghorns?... well over here in germany it's called the "Satans-greeting".... it's not satanic anymore, a lot of Rockbands do it and it's related to 'mystical and magical' things... but our politicians would never make it^^° SO as I didn't know what to do with the scarf's hands... I went for that...
Clockwork... is... in ... a tube... not much to say about him I guess ^^°
Anything else to say?
Well apart from the friggin background I did most of this at work... I had fun... apart of the friggin background...
I totally stuffed my pc's workspace with this giant 400 dpi thing... and every little step took several minutes >_> so with all the changing of the background you can guess I got quite a temper towards my PC and everyone else... I'm glad this is over...
The music I was listening to and that I kind of 'combine' with this piece is In the Land of Twilight, Under the Moon by Yuki Kajiura ... I'm usually not such a fan of Japanese music... but that is out of the OST to the .//hack/sign game... and I really liked that game... And I could so TOTALLY see Phantom and Danny doing an awesome special-moves-fight over the destiny of the world to that song, (and Phantom taunting Danny with the lyrics : Now you are watchin' us

First thing... I'm sorry if the whole artist comment is a bit harsh into your direction... please take into account that I've been working on that pic since you announced the contest, I'm speaking of my PC being the greatest bastard-lame ass... I gotta get up at 5 am to go to work and I had only today left to finish the pic AND the damn artist comment... so I was postponing like eating and drinking and sleeping... so my sense of judgment might be a bit off anyway...
Now to answer your question:

All the bad things in the world seem to happen to him... yeah I know he is the main character so well... figures! ^^°
A lot of characters go "Want(ed) into his pants!" (Paulina, Sam, Valerie, Writer, Phantom [?], Vlad [? their relationship is sort of... difficult ^^], various other girls/boys)
I know he is the maincharacter of Chess Piece... but I still think he's an attention whore... ^^°
But it really wasn't meant to personally hurt you or something... Maybe I'm jsut too much "Oh come on! Nobody cares about Danny! Post another CP page with Vlad!!!"-alike ^^°
So summary...
To ME he appears to have Gary-Stu-ish tendencies, I still like him though (he has the devilishness that I miss in CP Vlad so... yay ^^° )

See. Here's the thing, I DO think he has Gary Stu tendencies, but there is a difference between that and him being an actual Gary Stu. There IS a story behind why, but explaining it will spoil. My opinion is for you to wait it out and see what you have to say afterwards. There are a few things I need to correct you on though.

We see Danny kicking more butt then Vlad because he gets into more adventure. Vlad is relegated to King, so he often doesn't get to have all the fun (well, in his eyes) then Danny does. Vlad wants to go, believe me, but he has a duty to his people.
But you have to tell me WHEN and WHERE Danny has ever succeeded over Vlad. Because I have not made even one hint of such. #8 especially where Vlad was the winner of their fight. My stance between the two is that they're on equals. Vlad actually is the slightly stronger of the two, if not in physical terms (this being the man who chucked a car in #2).
Both their powers are growing. Danny is just seen more often because he gets stuck with the adventure. But the series is only halfway through. It ain't over till the fat lady sings!

He gives the "Nobody Understands Vibe", but does he actually input this on anyone? No. He wishes to merely be left alone to his own devices and makes no point in shoving it in others' directions. You call him an attention whore, but this is a wide misconception because Danny doesn't want attention. He wants to be left alone and do his own thang. The fact that he is a prince makes it difficult. Tucker himself is the one who wants attention. He practically flails his arms for 'em.
Danny is also largely content with his life. He loves who he is and the title that he holds. Any sadness on his part is something he wants to avoid. The problem is that its often thrust into his face. But outside of #8 (and flashbacks in #11), when has Danny really and I mean REALLY gotten overall emotional about his past? He doesn't think about it unless its pretty much smacked into him. And outside of two issues, I barely emphasized it.
Also keep in mind others suffer their own form of trauma. Kwan suffers a loving, but distant mother. Tucker wants someone to notice him. Sam is both attempting to free her people and find a purpose in life. Both Vlad and Skulker has questionable pasts waiting to be discovered with hints that their life isn't exactly happy as they make it look like. Valerie lived a rough life as a thief and suffers from aggressive and desire to win (which is part of the reason she wants Danny. Not just love, but because she sees herself as a winner), etc.
While it is blatant that Danny's life is shoved first (again, a main character thing), you really have to see some of the more subtle and see how they actually grow within the story. In short, it's imperative to pay attention to everyone, not just Danny, Vlad, Phantom, and Ghost Writer.

Wait. Sam? When did I make Sam romantically interested in Danny? She argues with him and respects him for that and vice versa. But so far, there is nothing romantic at all between the two.
Phantom...dude, he flirts with EVERYONE. Not just Danny.
As for the others...oooh, keep reading. In about two or three issues or so, Valerie and Paulina's opinion on Danny will change...which again relegates to my first comment. Danny's characterization is added there on purpose for a really big reason. Though the same reason applies to the other characters. I think you're letting your bias of both CP and Canon Danny being a brat get in the way.
Honestly, this is the comic where you really have to focus on everyone and not the basic four you mentioned. I notice a lot of GW in CP fanart (including this contest), but he's not a main character nor is he strictly important to the overall plot.

What I see is indeed like you stated it Danny kicking more butts... and Vlad sitting at home getting rubbished by Abe... therefor my perception of Vlad's "strength" is that it weakens... that's the problem with me I think... I kind of dive into the story but... a story where I only get the information the author gives... Of course Vlad is still all ass-kicking and of course, while Danny is out, he still trains and such but this tends to get lost in the background with me because my mind is like "You're part of the story, what you see is what happens!"... so I see Vlad getting "diminished" and Danny doing all the action stuff... my mind comes to the conclusion Danny > Vlad... Of course it isn'T that way but... well... with the sense of judgment being off and the short attention span ^^°
2. He doesn't give the 'vibes' to others. Ah very true.. BUT... he here is the thing with me going into the story again the reason why I perceive it that way... You see, he IS giving it to the reader... well of course he HAS to, other wise we wouldn't know about it... especially if it's necessary for the plot... or a later point in the story where we would winder then why he suddenly behaved like that if we didn't have the moping shown to us before... yet... makes me feel like I'm his shoulder to cry on... Which I'm not, of course, I'm not in the damn story... but it feels like it... yeah I know... I'm just a freak about good stories ¬_¬
I AM feeling into the problems of the other chars too, I'm happy when they get solved and disgruntled if something goes wrong, but yeah, I like those little sidestories and twists and turns because they are not like the problems of the maincharacter (excuse the words but it's best to describe my feeling) shoved into my face... (emphasis on "my")
3. I said they wanted into his pants... I never said something about romantic... and yet again... dammit... I think my perception of that whole comic is f##in twisted... Not to mention that I'm a slight perv anyway so I see sexual tension, allusions and signals everywhere... I know Sam is with Skulker (got the way until they'll get there is so friggin cute) however... she getting saved by Danny, rebelling against him (sort of) working in the palace, arguing with him... my (emphasis on my) mind puts some "she wants him, she doesn't know it but she wants him" on that...

Yeah i guess that's true to ... 25% ... Canon Danny isn't so brat-ish anymore... he used to be in earlier issues (well he grew up so, makes sense)... so his "younger" self still gets in the way, yes... but... Canon Danny... I just dont like canon Danny... But the more I see from CP Danny... the more I well... separate them... CP Danny and Canon Danny are not the same character for me... and getting even less... The way the Prince behaves by now... I see him more as an original character of yours than a character based on a TV series... so, Canon Danny gets only in my way there as when the topic comes to Daddy Vlad and his son Danny being all... weird-relationshippy... because then I am reminded to all the fanart of canon Danny and canon Vlad... and please don't make me start about this because I have to go to bed in two hours T_T
4. Ghostwriter. Yes I noticed too that a lot of people have him on their pics... I can only speak for myself when I say I know he isn't plot relevant, as you stated more than once that you didn't even plan him to 'live' so long, so he can't be a part of the "big deal"... but I'm just an addict to that man, that's why I slipped him in... However, it proves to you that either, some people don't realize he isn't important, OR, the more likely... that everybody loves the damn character ^^ (I know we didn't even argue about that)

So yes, what do we learn from the above stated things? I'm over obsessive about Ghostwriter... my mind is a creepy thing that gets partially very different messages then what your comic sends out/ perverts the messages your comic gives... and that it is not good if a reader is too appealed by a story....
I guess everything is more "in my head" than actually in your comics...

You did mention that you aren't a huge reader of CP, so I can't fault you if you missed out on tiny details.
It's entirely up to you on how you read it, but you do have to keep this mind: CP is not a straightforward story. Pretty much every little details you see, every character movement, interactions, foreshadowings, personality changes, story elements, whatever I put in most likely WILL impact future stories. This is not a story to be read lightly, you have to memorize it. That is my only advice I can give you, otherwise some of the major events, including Danny's might go through your head.

Yet what? You just answered your own complaint right there. It's because we the audience know while others don't. But that is hardly the fault of Danny. Unless he gains the ability to be self-aware and break the fourth wall (which only Dairy Priest is allowed to do), Danny isn't crying over to us, the audience. You can't blame him for that. It doesn't work. As I also said, outside of #8 and the flashbacks in #11, when has Danny ever shoved his emotional breakout in the story?
You complain that he's crying to "us", yet you also say its for the benefit of the story. That doesn't work; that statement contradicts each other. So which is it?

Yeah i guess that's true to ... 25% ... Canon Danny isn't so brat-ish anymore... he used to be in earlier issues (well he grew up so, makes sense)... so his "younger" self still gets in the way, yes...
That's the idea. Danny is growing up and realizing the people close to him are more then pawns and companions. They are his friends and if they have to smack him to realize that, they will.

Just to let you know, I don't mind if people make comparisons to Canon and CP Danny. The latter is based on the former, it makes sense. I even created CP Danny to counter Canon Danny's persona in mind during the first year of CP.

So yes, what do we learn from the above stated things? I'm over obsessive about Ghostwriter... my mind is a creepy thing that gets partially very different messages then what your comic sends out/ perverts the messages your comic gives... and that it is not good if a reader is too appealed by a story....
I guess everything is more "in my head" than actually in your comics..."
Honey, I'm honored you have your own theories or thoughts to the comic. Do you think I care if you view my comic in a perverted way? No. I'm the girl who ships Vlad and Danny which I know Hartman is gagging himself a river because I "perverted" it. CP itself IS a "perverted" thing when you're comparing DP's canon works. That is not my problem at all. You wanna draw CP Vlad and CP GW getting it on, I don't care. You want CP Danny getting impaled by spears, go nuts. I don't care.
The only reason I responded was just to clear up misconceptions, that is all.
