Description
At the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach CA. A weedy scorpionfish (Rhinopius frondosa) in the exhibit on animal camouflage. I absolutely love the pattern on the skin. Another fish in the tank of the same species had a completely different pattern.I've never tried a border before, and wanted to see if it improved it any.
Edit 7/31: added a line of color to border per =lumi-nara 's suggestion in the comments. Note to self - this is Edit, Stroke in Photoshop - I know I had used it before, but could not for the life of me find it until someone mentioned it in a tutorial. Sorry, but the word Stroke does not intuitively put me in mind of "Draw Open Box." :grr:

Marvelous shot!

Pretty painful. I think this one comes from Indonesia or something. We have our own type here; it hurts pretty bad, but the venom can be neutralized soaking in water as hot as you can stand - the heat breaks it down.
I think the stonefish they have at AOP are worse.

I think there might be one that lives down in Florida as well.
And I didn't know there were even any venomous animals who's venom could be neutralized with hot water... huh. Interesting.
And i would imagine the stonefish are worse. They're one species you do not want to mess with.

I like the border BTW.

Thanks on both counts! I haven't seen these guys lately, I wonder if the AOP still has them...

What a gorgeous fish. And of course great shot on your part
I would suggest taking out those tiny spots (I know they were in the water and I know that glass was scratched... but... one must make the effort... if not for you then at least for the fish so she can have ALL the attention she deserves )

Thanks so much!
Hmm, I'll have to go back and look at the original and fix it. It's possible I didn't even notice them, being so excited this one came out as well as it did.

Mr. Scorpionfish thanks you, as he came up with the pattern, and I am grateful I was able to display it to his advantage. Thanks!

Lovely pattern, awesomely ugly fish, it's a wonder they ever mate! I can hear the wife now, "Oh great, here comes Mr. Ugly all Day", lol.....um, forgive me. Very nice shot, It is really hard to get a good aquarium shot. I went to the Boston Aquarium and had little luck myself. Nicely done.

Sorry for the late reply - Thanks so much; I think they're kind of pretty myself, although not in a conventional sense, I suppose. The way the tank was set up was a great help -open top and brightly lit from above, so I wasn't trying to compensate for dimness.
Btw, who is in your icon? REminds me of Brent Spiner, except for the cowboy hat...
Anyway, thanks again.

It is indeed Brent Spiner! The cowboy hat shot was from a made for tv movie that he appeared in, it was out in the 1980's so he looks pretty young, he's my favorite hottie, believe it or not.

I believe! There's actually a pic of him as Data in my favorites - [link] (My favorite character on that show). I like him a lot as well, although I haven't seen him in too many other things, aside from musicals.

Sorry!!! Didn't mean to post that twice!!! I hit submit and it said "Sorry you do not have access to view this page" or something like that... so I went back and tried it again, not sure if it posted or not, and I got the same message. I had to try it 5-8 times before it worked. And I guess 2 of them worked! Oops!

Great capture... I love fish, all kinds, and especially the camo ones. They are quite neat. You did a great job on capturing it's beauty.
The border looks great... the only thing I can think of is putting a little line that's a different color around the photo... to offset the darkness of the photo from the background. Otherwise the darkness tends to fade in. But otherwise, great job!

Thanks very much! I love fish and marine critters enough that an aquarium pass is a very worthwhile investment. I just love all the seaweed fringe on this guy. His tankmate has the same outline, but a completely different skin pattern.
At the time, I could not, for the life of me, figure out how to create a colored, empty rectangle for the frame. I've figured out since then (because Photoshop calls it a stroke and not a box, boy isn't that intuitive? I was about to have one!) so maybe I should go back and put one in.

Hehe... yesh, photoshop terms... don'tcha love 'em
It took me probably a good 6 months of mapping out what part of the center of the photo was, so that I could align the text properly, when all I had to do was click on the tool that allows you to move the image about, and hit control + a, and up comes up a box at the top of the screen, that would automatically center my images and text. LOL! I'm such a doof sometimes. But alas, photoshop is quite daunting. Too many things have different names than I would give them. Like... marquee... what the heck is a marquee. It's a cropping tool to me... lol!

I'm convinced Photoshop has the same learning curve as Access or learning a programming language. Very, very high. One of those things that if you don't use it all the time, you'll forget how rapidly.
And thanks for the text tip - I didn't know that!

Very nice shot - good sharpness and composition. And of course a very interesting subject.
Well done
On the border, here it works out very well and imho many photos can gain immensely from the right border - but not all of them, for some it may even be the "death", but that is the beauty of digital work... you can try it out and if it doesn't work as you want it, you can simply delte the frame again

Thanks so much! My camera is autofocus, and quite often we don't agree on what part of the pic should be sharpest; however, this time it cooperated with me. The fish did, too!
I appreciate the hints about framing. I'll have to try different things.

It is unfortunate that there's not much of them around the Java Sea. They're really gorgeous !
sorta natural, beautiful lacework...
I'm having a difficulty in distinguishing between Rhinopias aphanes and R. frondosa....xp
And a really good photograph too - I have never being able to manage a shot between air, a pane of glass and water xD

This fish and one of his friends are housed in a small aquarium sitting on a counter. The bright light from above negated any reflections in the glass, and I was able to put my elbows on the counter to brace the camera and get the lens right up to the glass. Unforutnately, with the more dimly lit aquaria, I have the same problem - my camera isn't very fast.

Hey thanks a lot (and for the too)! Yes, I think you're right - I just didn't really know how to do it, so I looked up a few tutorials.
Thank goodness for fish that hold still and a brightly lit aquarium. Most of my pics from the aquarium are blurry; the "film speed" on my digital camera only goes up to ISO 400, which isn't quite fast enough.
