Hocking Hills State Park, Ohio

Hocking Hills is a set of Limestone and Sandstone erosional features in south-central Ohio. The area has a weaker layer of sediment laid down by an ancient ocean delta system (Tethys) and later, a river basin (Teays), in between two more erosionally-resistant types of rock above and below it. The weaker layer (made out of loose sandstone and gravel) was systematically washed-away by retreating glaciers at the end of the last Ice Age. The result is an area of what is essentially very much like a Karst landscape. The features in these images aren't actually part of a cave system, like the name of the lacales might imply. They are large ledges, overhangs and archways that remain of the top erosionally-resistant layer that rise over the empty spaces left by the removal of the sand, gravel and limestone layer below it.
