Animated PNG of an old profile image. Would you look at that -- after all these years, dA caught up with the standard and it works again!
(EDIT: 2024 -- Wix(?) may have broken it again LOL)

why does it have hair?

Assuming that you have played the old red version of Pokemon (where I got the inspiration), think of it like this: Through a serious of quick, unexpected and unlikely events, a pokemon was more or less combined with a person on the molecular/DNA level. The points of contact between the two DNA strands result in the expression of a few otherwise unusual traits in the dominantly expressed life form... in his case, as a charmander, sporting the fur/hair of his merged human counterpart. As a human, his eyes, skin, teeth and overall sensory capability would be affected.

Frankly, the "hair" is just the modified frayed ends of greatly lengthened micro-scales that already exist on the charmander-charizard line... but that's more details than I generally go into. The material that scales and hair are made of are really the same material (Keratin).

=-=

that would make it imposable for charmander to evolve.

with the massive dna changes and all.

Huh... looking back on my reply I made a silly mistake. I said the hair and scales were keratin when I meant collagen. I think I had been recently talking to someone about tree leaves changing their color back when I replied... anyway;

The story he comes from is highly science-fiction oriented and for all intents and purposes doesn't even take place in the pokemon universe you might expect. Firstly, the only kind of evolution there is the same kind of slow, DNA-mutation and survival variant we have in real life. Second, it is true that he would have trouble changing his form over time (it would've been gradual), however there is a certain plot detail for which the charmander part of the DNA had already been engineered to keep him in his current state, with or without the added complication of the entangled chimaera DNA he now has.

That all said, there is eventually a way to trick his cells into rapid electronically-assisted change, but at a large risk to himself. And even then it doesn't last.

so what your saying is that basically the charmander's a pokemorpfh...but can only morph into charmanders evolution lines...like a digimon?

The idea was inspired by the original Pokemon Red/Blue/Green, where Bill uses some kind of advanced computer system to combine himself with a pokemon "by mistake" (back then, it was the same sprite as charmander's... the newer versions for the GBA have him turned into a clefairy). The premise, is that the same thing has occurred here, except that I've gone into a lot more detail with the mechanics of such a thing. The biggest difference in my concept compared to the one that inspired it, is that unlike Bill, once combined with the charmander, Robert is permanently 'entangled' with the creature on a DNA/molecular level... any going back would be temporary at best, require technology and a *lot* of energy.

As far as the change in 'evolution' states go, it is much like the feat of trying to get him back as a human temporarily... the information exists in his DNA somewhere, but switcher/HOX-like genes have them turned off. Something has to know what to activate, and do so in a high energy state... the entire process in the storyline is actually quite convoluted and not elaborated on much as such. It requires assistance from an electronically-assisted cell reconstruction computer, which parallels the Pokemon Center healer devices in the games.

And as far as how this process relates to Digimon, I haven't the slightest clue. I don't know much at all about that concept, other than what they are in general. XP

The animation's not working - for either of them.

You've either got a webkit browser (Chrome, Safari... possibly Konquerer) or an outdated Firefox or IE install. Additionally, you might have a setting not to display animated images set.

If my user icon is also not working, the above case would not surprise me.

Animated PNG is a fairly new format. But I refuse to use gif in light of compatibility.

Yeah, Chrome hates PNG. Usually it won't even show the files.

Never had trouble with it not showing png files. It just doesn't display animated ones right.

I really like Chrome. I'd just like it a lot more if it were up to date with web standards.

I am assuming the animation is running on your end?

WarriorNick In reply to SentientAberration [2012-11-23 06:39:44 +0000 UTC]

It did when I loaded up an entirely new browser and the animation's pretty fluid. It must've been a nightmare animating the tail flame, though.

If you were using Chrome, it turns out you've got to add support for the image with an apng extension.

The flame actually wasn't that bad. I do flames in three steps; drawing and coloring them in three solid colors in paint, throwing a motion blur on them, and then a glow filter. I only had like four or five unique frames for the flame that I blurred together in transition frames (doubling the frames for the flames). In all, that part took probably ten minutes. The hard part was figuring out how to sync the blinking, breathing and flame animations together at once, and then organizing 80 copies of the image to import into an animator O_O

Hmm it looks better than how I could make it, I have used picture like applications before but mostly Paintshop pro.

Ironically, those big and expensive programs are generally somewhat useless for animations like this. I could have done this as a flash file, but I still would have had to do the png work to do that

And I know there are better ways to do this. I literally have a folder with all 80 frames of this eight second animation that I had to load sequentially into a program and save it.

But I don't really RP... not sure why it matters...?

Last time I did anything like RP, I didn't know what RP was. I passed a paper back and forth during the school day with essentially a battle of troll logic wits with a few others.

Hmmm... I guess that makes some sense.

Strangely, I think a lot of my ideas hit me like dreams; they form from many random variables from my own experiences that just seem to randomly assemble at any given time. I often need to be carrying a pen or something to write them down when they hit... because they often dissolve spontaneously like dreams do, too.
