Description
Here's one I haven't drawn in over a year, and felt it needed a redesign, the mysterious cryptid, the Mothman. I really wanted a cryptid animal to join the rogues gallery of Sentinel Corps, but for a while, I didn't know what creature could contend with superhumans. Bigfoot? nope. Nessie? Lives in Scotland. Chupacabra? eh, no. I did some digging and soon after, I found the Mothman, unsure at first, I read "eyewitness accounts" and other lore behind it and realized, this monster was perfect for a role as a villain in the Sentinel Corps universe. I mean c'mon, it even looks the part.Anyway, very little is known about this creature. Where did it come from? What is it? A mutation created in some secret lab? A supernatural entity born from the fires of hell? Or is it something not of this world? Despite all the theories, those who have seen it and lived to tell the tale agree on one thing, it is extremely dangerous. First eyewitness accounts take place in Point Pleasant, West Virginia in the 60's. Witnesses have claimed that it stalked them in the the night and even chased a couple in their car. Some even speculate that the creature was responsible for the collapse of the Silver Bridge, but this, like every other story, was never proven. Soon after, the sightings at Point Pleasant just stopped, no one had seen the creature since, although rumors of it being occasionally sighted in other parts of the country began to emerge, eventually the Mothman faded into folklore, something parents told stories of to scare their children, before comforting them with assurance that the monster isn't real, or so they believed.
Years later, a young couple were hiking in the forests of Stone Lake Park, surrounding Sapphire City. It was getting late, so they knew they had to get to their campsite before dark. The woods were filled with wildlife, and they didn't want to run into a cougar or a bear at night, little did they know that something far worse had laid claim to the forest, and it was watching them. Feeling uneasy, the couple hurried to their campsite, all while hearing strange noises coming from the forest. They nearly jumped out of their skins with fright when they suddenly heard a blood curdling screech, it didn't like any animal they've ever heard, and it definitely didn't sound human. The couple frantically ran towards the campsite, which was still twenty minutes away on foot, all while hearing that loud screech coming up from behind, along with the sound of giant wings flapping. Just as they were almost to the campsite, the wife suddenly felt a burst of wind brush past her, the force knocking her to ground. Looking around, she doesn't see what caused it, but then she realized to her horror, her husband was no longer beside her. In a panic, she cried out for him, her voice blaring in the night, but all she heard was complete silence, no birds, no crickets, nothing, just dead silence. Overwhelmed by fear, she slowly backed up, until she bumped into something, and it didn't feel like a tree. She could hear chittering sounds directly behind her, and sense of utter dread consumed her. She slowly turned to see a large, black mass standing before her. As she looked up towards it, the last thing she saw was large, piercing red eyes, before her world went dark, the Mothman had claimed it's first victims in Sapphire City.
Based on the lore of read on this creature, I figured the Mothman would be one of the few cryptid creatures that can hold it's own in a world of superpowered beings. Using this research, I came up with it's abilities and traits that make it a deadly force to contend with. Witnesses claimed it chased their car while going 80 or 100 mph, meaning that at least in the air, the Mothman can reach considerable speeds. Some have even associated it with fire, so I gave it the ability to manipulate fire, not generate it like Wildfire can. It's other abilities range from a shadowy form that allows it to be transparent and phase through objects. The creature also seems to possess a degree of a super strength, allowing it to go toe-to-toe with some heavy hitters. With this wide range of abilities, it's difficult to find a weakness. However, the Mothman seems to prefer hunting at night, so it's likely sunlight and other bright lights might harm it's large, sensitive eyes. Also while it's transparency is useful, it can't bypass through electrical fields or currents, such as a force field, or even Miss Mimic's electric stun batons. It's also fair to note that while this creature possess an advanced predatory intelligence, it appears to act more like an animal than some supernatural entity, and can be outsmarted and lured into a trap. Still, the Mothman is a deadly adversary in the Sentinel Corps universe and is a problem for both the Sentinels and Eric and Trixie deal with, as it has claimed Sapphire City and it's surrounding forests as it's new hunting grounds, and it has no plans of leaving anytime soon.
