In the earliest ref, CHARLES DEXTER WARD. he seems to be conventional, but he doesn';t appear directly, just his works.
In DUNWICH HORROR, he is definitely NOT human in looks.
He also makes appearances in LURKER AT THE THRESHOLD. which is mostly by Derleth.The spheres...
He seems benevolent in THROUGH THE GATES OF THE SILVER KEY. It is by disregarding his advice that Randolph Carter got into the mess he was in, NOT by any malice on Yog-Sothoth's part.
