I've only drawn a couple animals in my life, they've always been a huge challenge for me.  I'm still practicing with them, but I've yet to get to the point of drawing my own creatures.

For me it was people being the really difficult subject with animals and aliens being way easier. But slowly but surely making progress.
I recommend taking part in contests, puts you out of comfort zone having to draw something different every time. The prospect of a price makes it even more fun learning process.

The problem I have with contests is that I don't finish things nearly fast enough to participate on time.  I'm slow at producing artwork I'm uncertain of, so I rarely finish on time.  I just go out of my way to practice things I'm unfamiliar with.

Yeah I get that.
I often get this real boost with deadlines, makes me work harder and faster. The results aren't always ideal but I still learn plenty. :3

Deadlines make me stress out, I'm the complete opposite. XD
It leaves me unsatisfied with the end result.
