Description Orni: "Face it Petrie, you are a sharpbeak. You need to stop stuffing your beak with that disgusting green food."

Petrie: "Me don't know... What if Littlefoot and friends find out?"

Orni: "If they are truely your friends they wont care what you eat... You eat the small swimmers from the big water anyway."

Petrie: "..."

Orni: "you're just hurting yourself, if you stay on this course."

-------------------------

I loved "The Land Before Time" when I was growing up even enjoyed the sequels, despite them turning into musicals. But what drives me crazy is how they portrayed some of the dinosaurs. Yeah yeah it's a kids movie/series I just can't help it if it sets off my pet peeve. Majority of the "flyers" are Pterosaurs and depending on the species eat; Fish, Invertebrates, Carrion, and other small animals. And Petrie and his family are Pteranodon and they primarily ate "Fish"

So knowing that, I decide to draw an older Petrie gripping a fish reluctant to eat it. While Orni is trying to get him to accept the fact he's not a Herbivore. Poor Petrie is too worried about what everyone else in the Great Valley will think of him, it is hard when you find out you're a sharpbeak (Flyer's equivalent to Sharptooth)

Orni is a female Ornithocheirus and my First Fan Character in the Land Before Time universe. She's a wandering Flyer that came from across the Big Water to the Great Valley, she was enlisted by Petrie's mother to help teach her children to fish at the Big Water and soon has to help Petrie with his little dilemma.

Orni belongs to me
Petrie and The Land Before Time belong to: Universal Pictures and Don Bluth

Yeah, there didn't seem to be a real reason to make Petrie a vegetarian. It's already established that it's fine to eat fish, bugs, and the like and still be part of "leaf-eater" society. That's what Chomper did, and Ruby also ate clams (though she also eats plants, which makes her an omnivore).Β

I don't think Littlefoot and his friends would mind if Petrie ate fish. It would be a different story however if he ate smaller dinosaurs.

Looks like Petrie is trying to face reality that pterosaurs are carnivores.

Whats wrong with fish Cetrie, chomper eats them you you don't mind that (I imagine that in the LBT universe petrosaurs are bothteeth, that is they eat both plants and fish)

Love the expressions in this
Very nice ^^

Ahh I loved Land Before Time as well. So many good memories. Even when I was a little kid I was always a tad disappointed the carnivores were always the 'bad guys' and never really got any good roles. Just growl and snarl and attack anything that moves. Was very fun when Chomper finally came around to 'prove' they're not mindless monsters just because they eat meat.Β  Yeah, it's a kid's show but alas.
I did love the 'allosaurus' in the Saurus Rock film though, was cute somehow ^^

That always bugged me too, and then I realised -epic music- Pterano! His claws are huge, and sharp. Plus you can see him having pointy teeth in some shots. I always imagined in the LBT universe, males ate fish and females didn't cuz of how differently Pterano and Petrie's mom where drawn.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SergeanTrooper In reply to viper2301 [2012-12-12 02:40:18 +0000 UTC]

Not really, the reasoning why pterano and Petrie's mother are drawn differently is because in pterosaur species Males have large crest while females barely had any, and juveniles like Petrie and his siblings would look like their mother until they grew older and got a more developed crest like pterano if they are males. all ate vegitation in the series.

yeah sorry, Petrie is a Pteranodon which diet consisted of primarily of fish and some invertebrates.
we're omnivorous so we have the choice what we eat.

karkovice1 In reply to SergeanTrooper [2012-12-04 12:48:38 +0000 UTC]

Have you ever seen Dinosaur Train?

In that show, the pteranodons are shown as fish eaters.

In LBT, Petrie was always shown(as far as I can remember) as being a vegetarian, primarily eating berries; which tells me that he wouldn't be a pteranodon.

But I could be wrong. :/

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SergeanTrooper In reply to karkovice1 [2012-12-04 13:48:43 +0000 UTC]

Yes I have seen Dinosaur Train, and the difference between that show and Land Before Time is that they are focusing on teaching kids about dinosaurs unlike The Land Before Time. So everything in that show is portrayed properly because it's an educational cartoon.

And Petrie is a Pteranodon, Don Bluth wasn't really aiming for accuracy only aiming at the fact kids liked dinosaurs at the time even though they didn't know jack shit about them.

Ah, yes, TLBT, yeah really started going down hill in that direction after 4th or 5th? Which ever one had the singing alien dinos (looked sort of like velociraptors), all I know is I saw that one and went, wat?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

TabalugaDragon In reply to KodyYoung [2012-12-09 13:57:03 +0000 UTC]

I personally became a HUGE fan of the franchise after I saw all the sequels. And I don't agree when people call them musicals. They can be called so only during the songs, aside from them the sequels are ordinary-made movies with storyline and all. And I disagree that the sequels became worse after 3 or 4, they actually became much better. since the movie 7(The stone of cold fire) the cartoon seemed to be changed from (for little kids only) to family-friendly movies. More mature and serious characters appeared, dialogues started being more logical and less childish, but mainly, the animation greately improved since 7-th movie and reached it's peak(an incredible peace of 2D traditional animation) at the 10-th movie.
And I agree that the last one(that's why it was the last one, I think), The wisdom of friends was rubbish, but that I hate it as much as you guys do, but it was very silly and childish once again, almost like it was with the 3 first sequels. There were however some things I enjoyed in it, but mostly it was a big failure

Ah that one was "Stone of Cold Fire" I actually liked that one mainly for Pterano and his friends, but I agree the series did die a bit as sequels came out I still watched them and some were alright. the one I hated was "wisdon of Friends" with those hideous dinosaurs called "yellow bellie"

I just google that and [link]
Seriously, wtf, they just made kid friendly dinos, not like the semi-realistic they looked in TLBT 1. And jesus fuckin christ, they're lazy as fuck too, in that screen shot, they copied and pasted the same units over again to fill the space.

That's good you see my point. It's a great series but just wished they fixed some of the errors, I wouldn't mind it as much if they made petrie eat bugs, since he is too small to fish. but Plants is a big no-no.
