Anubis, originally the god of all things relating to death, had to step aside when Osiris became popular, so he lost his God of Death status. However, Anubis retained his connection to mummification and the action of dying, and so he was still a hugely popular god. He was also in charge of determining who got in to Aaru (Egyptian heaven).

i've always loved Anubis the best out of the egyptian gods, now that I'm studying ancient egypt, I find it more and more interesting. This stuff just sucks me right in.

correction: Anubis is the guardian of souls to the underworld & Osiris is the god of the underworld, Osiris is Anubis's uncle so he wasn't born yet to be the god before Osiris!!

...That is, until about 2000 or so years ago, when things changed and people started believing in different things. Now Anubis and just about all the other ancient gods and pantheons (aside from a few who were given a second chance to rule thanks to Neopagenism), have been sitting around in the Realm of Lost Gods (a sort of divine retirement home estate).
Anubis: "Damn them all...I used to have a job until 'God' took over. I mean, really...how the hell is one god supposed to do all the things required for maintaining the Universe?!" (Takes a drink of Soma).
Horus: "Well, you are at least the most popular god among the humans' furry fandom, right? I mean, doesn't it make you feel better that you still have some fame on the mortal world despite the official current religions?"
Anubis: "What the hell's furry fandom?"
(Horus shows him on a holy laptop {Apple brand})
Anubis: (sobs) "IT'S JUST NOT THE SAME!!!!!!"

Aaru! I didn't know that! Two people I know come from the swiss city of Aarau... That amuses far too much.
