Description Right now at CalARTS we are required to have at least 9 classes, and each is ungodly long.....but one of them is an Animal Drawing Course which I love coming too every saturday at the LA Zoo and eventually onto other locations. These are clips from my sketchbook, done in watercolor and micron. Enjoy.

I do actually! I'd stick to the CalARTs admission requirements and put in A LOT of life drawing (sketches, fully finished, rough stuff [quick sketches, 1 minute, 5 minute, cafe sketches, landscapes]) but try to showcase that you're really observing the people you draw, not just copying into "beautiful" drawing. Also, experimenting with different art styles and drawing methods (stuff with oil, watercolor, pen and ink: abstract figure drawing, german expressionism, pointilism) also helps as well. It showcases that you're willing to learn something new and are not comfortable with where you are at artistically. Film studies are pretty good, like a solid sequence from your favorite movie, and take it and do something new with it artistically. Have some of your personal work too!?!

The admissions people in the past have been looking for artists with a point of view, if they have the passion for it, and are they willing to learn new things.

Also, try to avoid putting too many academic figure drawing in your portfolio. It's something they've not always approved of in portfolios, but one or two really strong academic pieces are encouraged.

When you are building your portfolio, let it speak of who you are. the work should reflect your unique personality or what you really love about artmaking. The content that you illustrate, or the landscapes that you draw, etc...really make you stand out in a class of people that will be entirely different than you. Take every effort to make your portfolio unique and stand out so you are remembered when the reviewers make their decision.

Also, have fun and enjoy the process. the folks that look over your stuff know if you're having a good time with your work as it's typically a lot stronger. I hope this helps! Best of luck to you!

It sounds like so much fun! Animals are so fun to watch/draw. Although horses are so hard. Oh well.
