"I could tell that the town had abandoned all grace
By the passion for tickling I saw in each face,
But I'd made it my duty to rescue the place
So I gathered my will for to plead my best case;
I proclaimed what was proper and prudent and prim
Gave a more lasting joy than a fanciful whim,
Choosing each man in turn, I tried hard to reach him
But the lack of response made my chances seem dim;
If I couldn't persuade them, decorum would die

Though I had no success, I continued to try
When I saw a new gleam enter into each eye;"
