well, I am not entirely sure what official reos lore says to that lmao

But I can tell you that for this girl it took some time
She was caught as an adolescent and the people who had her didn't manage to control her.
When Lars bought her he had a tough time with her initially as well but since xena has mentalist magic (e.g. she can use her thoughts to talk to lars) she eventually befriended him so their bond goes deeper than handler and mount.
