History

500 years from now, humans have left Earth, partially because it was inhospitable and partly because there were simply too many humans to fit on one planet.

Isaak and Bertrand both hail from the German colonies on Terra 2, the second planet in the chain of seven that make up the Terra system.

Before

Very little is known about either of these men past the point that they met; perhaps more will be revealed in subsequent battles. All you need know is that Bertrand is terrified by the thought of dying and Isaak was once married.

After

The earliest confirmed information is from the point when Isaak and Bertrand met. By that point, Isaak was a licensed surgeon and Bertrand had signed on as his assistant; Isaak ran his own clinic.

As well as general medical work, Isaak had a particular interest in the new trend of 'splicing' -- akin to getting a piercing or a tattoo, in this time. At the simplest, it involved modifying the body structure into a form that it didn't generally take. Naturally he then acquired a license to perform such surgeries alongside his usual practice activities -- and his first patient was Bertrand. How willing Bertrand was is unknown, but he doesn't seem too bothered by his condition now, so it is safe to assume he had some hand in it.

The clinic survived for many more years without incident, operating perfectly within the realm of legality. And then the pirates came.

It was common practice, as it had been with the pirates of old, to abduct crew members when no one suitable could be hired. Originally they had just come for Isaak, but after seeing how Bertrand fought, they decided to commandeer him too.

Now both of them work aboard the ship Andromeda, willingly enough. Isaak is not terribly thrilled with the illegal activity that he is being forced into aiding, but he is quickly adapting to the life of a pirate-- and he always has his watchdog, Bertrand, to stick up for him. Bertrand does not, it should be noted, answer to any member of the crew other than Isaak. This causes no small amount of tension on the ship.

Personality

Bertrand

Bertrand is loud, brash, and somewhat crass. He tends to see himself as the person to be; his ego knows no bounds. He will purposefully pick fights just to prove how strong he is and to show off his modified body, of which he is very proud.

Bertrand also will not hesitate to kill if he has to. This has been highlighted by his becoming a pirate; he tends to murder people in over-the-top ways, and will often brutalize a corpse long after there is no need. Most people chalk this up to his ego and his desire to prove that he is invincible -- and they are half right.

Bertrand is afraid of death. He's afraid of that feeling of powerlessness, of not knowing what will happen after. By killing others, and doing reckless things, and pushing the envelope as far as he can, he is constantly trying to reassure himself that he can get away with living one more day. He must prove to himself that he is invincible, or else his veneer of superiority and strength will crack.

It is for this reason that he sticks so closely by Isaak. He knows that no matter how badly he screws up, Isaak will patch him up and let him off with a severe scolding, and that will be it. Isaak is his reassurance when all else fails.

Isaak

Isaak is calmer than Bertrand; he is the logical center of the duo, and the planner. He has a much stronger sense of morality, as well, and will often privately condemn the activities of his crewmates.

The one thing he truly cannot stand is the injury or murder of innocent children, which unfortunately occurs all too often under his nose. This is the only time he feels it necessary to speak out against the activities of the pirates around him; this often results in him being beaten or locked in his quarters for a few days without food. To the crew, he is expendable, and he knows it; this is why he keeps Bertrand around as a safety net. So long as he has Bertrand, who he trusts and who he knows will defend him, Isaak feels comfortable on the ship because he knows that he has at least one ally.

Together

As mentioned above, Isaak and Bertrand fight and needle each other incessantly. It is both a way for them to let off steam and, bizarrely, a way of showing their affection for one another. For some reason, between them, nettling and taunting and even full-blown verbal and physical fighting translates not into hatred but into friendship and, possibly, love (they will both deny it. It is a professional agreement because the other crew members are terrifying and they needed to present themselves as taken. That's all. Really).

Abilities

Bertrand

Bertrand's abilities are almost entirely physical. His spliced body enables him to run faster and jump higher than a normal human; a kick from him is also likely to do a great deal of damage, thanks to the strength of his legs. Of course, there is something to be said for huge fangs and claws as well.

His eyes enable him to see in the dark much better than human eyes; it came at the price of him seeing things only in black and white, but he doesn't view this as too big of a problem. His eyes are also highly visible, what with the glowing green, so stealth for him is difficult to pull of at night unless he can keep his eyes hidden up until the point of engaging his prey.

As for weapons... well. Bertrand is a risk-taker. Normally, he has none.

Isaak

Isaak greatest ability is Bertrand, really. Bertrand will listen to him and no one else, making him into a sort of sentient, unpredictable weapon (I didn't say that he listened all the time).

He of course has his medical knowledge and his splicing abilities, though for fighting this would only come in handy in very specific cases; mostly he likes to stay back and patch Bertrand up once the threat has been dispatched.

The brace on his leg is not so much a brace as it is a device that keeps his leg alive; he has a slow-acting disease which kills flesh from the inside out. Luckily it can be combatted, if not cured (hence the blue cables feeding into his skin; that is the combative chemical). Cutting off the chemical would not have much of an immediate effect, but it would certainly slow him down and weaken him considerably. There is enough chemical in the cables for one month increments; he has to fill them at the end of that time period or risk the disease advancing.

He also has his fancy biomechanical eye, which makes triage quite a bit easier: he can scan those injured and get a fairly accurate reading on their vital signs, as well as possibilities for injury diagnosis. The readings appear in the lens in front of his organic eye. They are never 100% correct, however, and so he generally checks the patient himself as well unless there is absolutely no time.

Isaak's only real weapon that is constantly on his person is his cane. Though not actually made for battle, it is still metal and can be used as a bludgeoning tool should all else fail. He also carries a small gun inside his coat; it isn't likely to do much damage except at point-blank distance.

Ffff oh no. The SS Andromeda is NOT a daycare.

Also for reasons I shall not reveal at this time, Isaak is very leery of children. OOOOoooOOOoooooOOOO

So much love for this.

So

Much

I really adore the story you've set up for these two, I'm not even sure what I can say beyond 'djajsasksILIKE' since its dark and even if you didn't go into HUGE CRAZY detail about the universe- the way these two are present it give it some depth without you needing to scrabble a map together with names containing z's and ' between letters. and manly 'romance', ONE OF MY MANY WEAKNESSES!

I honestly can't wait to see what you'll do with them next, both are glorious bastards and I adore that like no ones business.
