Description A colour/shading tutorial c| Sorry for any spelling mistakes or bad grammar if there is, but I really hope despite of that this tut is understandable, if you got any questions or anything just Note me, or comment c: I know this tutorial is a combination of Photoshop and Open Canvas but that's just how ==>I<== like to work. I use Photoshop CS3 and Open Canvas 4.06EPlus for my work. You should be able to download a free version of Open Canvas 1.1, just google it. It works fairly the same as Open Canvas4.06EPlus, and you should be able to perform the steps I used in that version too c:

Open Canvas and Photoshop work well together, because Open Canvas allows you to open PSD files as well. So save your progress in a PSD file so you can import it into Open Canvas to continue with the Shading steps.

And if you don't have Photoshop, the tools I used are usually integrated in other programms too like Paint Shop Pro and Painter.

Anyways enough babbling, enjoy the tut and I hope it's helpful!

Hi, thanks a lot for the tutorial. But I can't open my Photoshop file in Open Canvas. Any idea why?

Sevrn In reply to Yamilisa [2009-02-21 16:39:33 +0000 UTC]

Hmm did you save it as a .psd file? And what versions of PS and OC are you using?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Yamilisa In reply to Sevrn [2009-02-21 17:33:13 +0000 UTC]

I did save it as a psd file. When I want to open it in OC, I choose 'all files', at the bottom, but then when I double click the psd file, nothing happens. It doesn't open.

My PS version is, in this case, CS, but I also have CS2. Don't see how that would make much of a difference though. OC is the same version as yours, although it's downloaded. You think it could be some kind of bug or something?

Sevrn In reply to Yamilisa [2009-02-21 18:03:54 +0000 UTC]

Hmm it could be, I use CS3 but I don't think that should matter, try changing the filename maybe? Or does it open none of the psd files? 3:

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Yamilisa In reply to Sevrn [2009-02-21 18:44:10 +0000 UTC]

Nope, doesn't open any of the psd files. *sigh* Guess I'll just have to color in PS then. It's too bad though, coz I think OC has much nicer techniques, for coloring at least.

Aww shame 3: Yea I love the watercolor-y tools in there, it's really nice for shading pics

Sevrn In reply to Yamilisa [2009-02-23 21:29:37 +0000 UTC]

aww 3: sorry I couldn't help you any further.. but there might be another way, for non bg pictures atleast.. save your file as regular png or jpeg, then import it in OC then set your colour layer to multiply, create a new layer under your colour layer and shade on that?

Yamilisa In reply to Sevrn [2009-02-24 18:54:31 +0000 UTC]

Hm, I think I've found a way to do it. If I open my drawing as a jpeg file in OC, I can delete all the white around the lineart. I've only tried it with a small part of it though, and it looks... decent. I hope, when I do all of it, I won't have too many white leftover pixels at the edges. *sigh* I still wish I could switch between programs. Guess I'll just have to get by with what I have. Again. :/

Yeah thanks. Maybe if I have money, I'll actually *buy* OC. Hopefully, I can switch between programs then. (PS is also copied *cough* >_> )

Sure, but then I recommend picking a soft brush with medium opacity for the shading c:
